To get this thread back on track for my first post on this forum, I thought I would present some truth.

First and foremost, it can not be denied that the NRL is winning the ratings in Sydney and in Brisbane. I am not certain, but this could be an indication of the difference between live presentation and delayed presentation - as I believe Sydney and Brisbane do to AFL evening fixtures, in particular on Friday nights.

On the other hand, in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth it is clear that the AFL have control of the battle. This is understandable as they are AFL cities, unlike Sydney and Brisbane.

I observe from the ratings totals published on this website, including those from the Pay TV coverage, that on a national scale the AFL is winning the national battle. This can not be denied.

I also observe through reading postings here before I joined, that the NRL supporters are preaching the addition of regional figures and that AFL supporters are putting down the accuracy of said figures. Ratings in general for both metropolitan and regional areas are suspect for various reasons, but at present we must rely on the metropolitan figures at least because they at least have a consistent zone to work from. There are many holes in the regional ratings structure that are presently biased towards New South Wales. This is an unfortunate situation that should be remedied at the earliest opportunity so that ultimately the whole Australian population is represented in surveys taken, and by one provider and not two as is the case at present. This would resolve the "overlap" issue that had been argued about.

What concerns me above all else though is the reliance the NRL supporters have on these ratings. It's not sustainable, because in order for sports to work there must be crowds at games. This is an area that the AFL is winning much more easily than they are in the nationwide metropolitan battle for TV ratings.

It's sad to see both sides take pot shots at each other completely off topic. It would be more prudent to argue and fight on topic lines, such as why it is so hard for us to accept the TV ratings figures are not the issue for the NRL that attendances are.

We no longer need one off games like it anymore because we have a thriving and growing truly national competition where Australia's states are represented on a weekly basis in front of huge crowd and tv audiences. That can be denied, and is. The ARL on Pay TV in all department are well shy of the NRL who provide around 75 of Foxtels 100 maches to the AFL 8. On FTA The AFL currently have far more matches . That is why there overall ratings appear to be higher, but even then, If regional Tv figures were included there ratings would be below ours.

I would be very interested to hear what the holes are in regional ratings in partitcular the ones that the Metro system (particularly the overlap myth) don't have. It certainly seems convenient given NSW have 5 M+ regional viewers.


All the key statistics for the NRL go up ever year, so how is it not sustainable.
