Me personally, I would not know what the heartland is for League anymore. Not even sure there was one, south and east sydney always big, western sydney big, newcastle, then of course people in queensland would argue history shows they are. But know one could ever claim gold coast lol

Have you ever seriously heard the Gold Coast being called Rugby League heartland?, seriously?

If it was why did it take so long to put a club there, then fold, put another club there fold, and now a third club which is struggling. It is not Rugby League heartland, and that is fine, nothing wrong with that, I don' know what RL heartland is, because it has a few places where it is traditionally strong, the thing is you really can't have more than 1 heartland it doesn't make sense. But without doubt Queensland centered on Brisbane out to Ipswich is traditionally strong, QRL might claim it to be the heartland, but I bet NSWRL would object, and argue South East Sydney is the traditional heartland, Souths, Easts, St George, West, Balmain all within 20 km of each other. (throw in Newtown as well)

I would argue working class areas of Sydney as being the heartland, what started with the above teams, then moved west as the working class moved west.

Just my thoughts.

Football is easier to pick, although still debatable, but West and South West Sydney is Football heartland, Melbourne might debate it but I think West South West Sydney is the heartland for football
