Penrith have opted to shun sponsorship dollars in favour of naming rights to their NRL home ground from next year onwards.
The NRL club on Tuesday announced Pepper Stadium would be known as Panthers Stadium in 2018 following the end of their partnership with Pepper Money

It doesn't seem mysterious to me. They said they made a commercial decision to name the joint Panthers to leverage their brand name. I can't see anything negative in that.

yes I agree. I think they sacrificed whatever how much they were getting for sponsorship rights.

Two seperate studies conducted by Roy Morgan re. 2017 supporter base for NRL and for AFL make for interesting reading.

Immediate observations:
A) Gold Coast and GWS struggling to gain a foothold in regions that already have a well established AFL team.
B) Penrith apparently have the strongest brand of any club in the country (from 2013 research) yet have the lowest supporter base of any established club.
C) AFL has alsmost I.5 million more supporters in Australia than NRL
