AFL fans see the entire comp, not just the bottom few. The Lions had a pretty promising year in then end, and even knocked off a few top 4 teams along the way. =D>

The tragedy of the AFL's decision to move into new frontiers on the Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney already is being played out at the foot of the ladder.

While I am a strong supporter of expansion, introducing two teams almost concurrently and providing the enormous concessions to the Suns and Giants has had a harsh consequence which will affect several clubs for several years.

Put simply, those struggling at the bottom of the ladder - excluding the pair of expansion teams - now have a long road to hoe as their usual source of replenishment through the draft has been effectively sapped.

The way I see it, there will be pain for four or five years.

With two new clubs taking almost all of the best young players in the nation, there is a dearth of talent being spread through the lists and it was always going to weaken the competition overall.

Sides near the bottom of the ladder and relying on a replenishment of first and second-round picks simply haven't been able to get their slice.

The replenishment needed to have taken place before the last two drafts, and some clubs missed the boat.

That means the poorer teams from 2010, 2011 and even this year are experiencing the inevitable stagnation that many critics predicted, while the sides at the top will stay at the top if they have reasonably young lists.

Melbourne's recruiting has been ordinary in recent seasons, there's no question about that.

The Western Bulldogs, in many respects, have drafted the same type of player for too long and have been caught out with not enough variety.

Port Adelaide are bringing on a few kids, but there's no replenishment coming through.
Nothing new here. Everyone already know these teams will take 5 or so years to be good.

AFL ratings and crowds are at record levels because other than the bottom 4 teams the rest of the comp is more even than ever.
Your right about one thing here XMAN, AFL crowds are at a record, record decline

It'll be a one off. Next year the SCG and skilled stadium will have increased capacity instead of dropping due to construction. The effects of 2 new expansion teams, new games in Tas, and all games shown live against the gate on TV will be absorbed.

It's all upside now.

Seriously though Xman, you're giving bigups to the lions?

It was the most lopsided season in living history and perhaps ever and the lions were one of the basketcases, they were, quite simply uncompetitive, week in week out, except for the odd occasion when the sun shone out of their a holes and the team they were up against forgot to turn up...oh and when they were playing one of the other 5-6 basketcases in the comp. Thank god the regular season is over!

The Lions beat the Eagles and Crows. They ended up with 10 wins and 12 losses. How is that a basket case???

The lions prob would have been in the GF of the basketcaser competition prob against port adelaide or the Western bulldogs...

6 other basketcase sides gives the lions about 9 games they can compete in during the reg season... and the sun shone out of their a holes against the crows and eagles.

Think about it Xman.

a team with a win/loss ratio of 45% should never be considered a basket case, especially if they beat teams in the top four.

:blahblah:

When there's seven basketcases a win loss ratio of 45% means you suck and are uncompetitive, as the lions were.

Xman can you dicredit my statement that this was the most lopsided comp in living memory? Cause if you cant all your arguments are dribble...which they are heheh

Uncompetitive? last year we only won 4 games and this year we ended up winning 10 games, that's a huge improvement in this so called lopsided comp :-k :-k :-k :-k

and not to mention we were only 2 wins away from the top 8 :thumbleft: :thumbleft: :thumbleft: :thumbleft: :thumbleft: so try harder.

Yes I gave credit where its due. As i said, the lions would have been right in contention for the Gf in the basketcasers league i.e. the bottom 7 AFL sides this year...right up there

QLDAFL can you discredit that this years comp was the most lopsided in living memory? Cause if ya cant you're talking dribble also...which you are heheh.

so teams that just miss the finals are basket cases because the majority of their wins are against other basket case teams?

No it doesnt because every other comp in the world is most likely far less lopsided than the AFL was this season. You know exactly what im talking about Helen, your weasling isnt getting you far.
