Over the last two weeks no AFL games have overlapped. If we compare the PTV games over the last two weeks on the same days both the AFL and the NRL have games on PTV on Saturday and Sunday. The AFL has a game on Friday night but it is televised on FTA around Australia The NRL doesnt have a game on PTV on Friday night. The NRL has a PTV game on Monday but the AFL doesnt have a game. So because the other code doesn't have a game on Fridays and Mondays, I will only compare Saturday and Sunday games. All of the AFL games on Saturday and Sunday are also televised to non-Victorian markets on FTA as well. Here are the average ratings:

Over the last 2 weeks the NRL has had 5 matches Saturday and Sunday on PTV averaging 260K
Over the last 2 weeks the AFL has had 8 matches Saturday and Sunday on PTV averaging 220K

The only difference was that every single game on PTV for AFL has also been televised to a local market on FTA.
I would say that there is next to no difference between these matches, due to the AFL having FTA to local markets. So in other words local markets would make up that 40K difference if these games were televised on PTV only to local markets. The AFL results included 3 games involving new clubs GC and GWS.

Well said. The other issue is the time each game is shown. A far higher proportion of the NRLs paytv games are in prime time (late Sat arvo, SN, MN from 5 games, compared to the AFLs 3 from 9 games) so that would bolster their average significantly in comparison.

The highest rating shows of the week are the news at 6pm. Doesn't your Saturday game often go from 5.30pm to 7.30pm? If that's not prime time nothing is!

Averages per game don't work because the NRLs games are shown in isolation and the AFLs concurrently. Games per time slot work which is similar to what the NRL claim on Friday nights. This would favour the AFL heavily.

Yeah, the AFL won almost every FTA 5 city ratings with no live coverage for almost half of the AFls heartland

I find it highly amusing that last year when the cumulative audience was higher for the NRL yet the average for the AFL was higher the NRL claimed it as a win.Now this year they are being pumped on cumulative numbers but they want to talk averages on PTV.However you want to put it more people will watch AFL on tele this year than NRL.End of story

Also, these figures are grossly distorted by the Broncos! 336k for a city of 2mil (plus add .5m for GC) is crazy, but hardly surprising given the one team represents a city of 2 million people.

355k for coll v WC on Saturday afternoon.

This is the second highest rating for either code for a game played outside of prime time. The only higher rating game outside prime time was the NRLs Anzac day game, a day which both code recorded record TV figures.

Impressive what a stand alone payTV game of AFL will rated when it involves a blockbuster matchup. In prime time it could have nudged 400k.
