This will be a massive injection for AFL - a brand new state of the art stadium. I still think they will have a SoO there - maybe in the first year to showcase it - plus the extra revenue they would get from ticket sales. Maybe it will be a weekend of sport - a celebration - with AFL, NRL. Maybe a magic round game or two could be played there? Will be interesting. Who knows, down the track a new rectangular stadium at victoria Park... if there is room.

On the news the other day they interviewed an ex premier Newman?…was leading a group of local greenies trying to have the construction stadium stopped and built in another location. Has this gained much traction or still making any noise?

It will be like the Albert Park protesters - they'll make some noise but unless the Olympics gets cancelled or put back - this stadium is going to be built at Victoria Park.

funny you mentioned them, when migrated to Australia round 6 years ago, and being a big F1 fan i went to Melbourne to see the F1, some protesters were there with the "save Albert Park" banner the protest has been going on since the beginning of the F1 event in the City round the mid 90s. on talking to some of them for a stir, some they didnt appear to have much going on upstairs but fuelled on emotion

Don’t forget the No.1 sport’: Peter V’landys puts pressure on QLD after Suncorp Stadium snub

ARLC chairman Peter V’landys has applied the pressure to the Queensland government over future plans for Suncorp Stadium, after the Sunshine State’s home of rugby league was overlooked as an Olympic event host.

After the unveiling of venues on Tuesday for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, it was revealed that Suncorp Stadium – home to the Brisbane Broncos and Dolphins – had been snubbed, despite originally being a contender for the opening and closing ceremonies.

Instead, a state-of-the-art, 63,000-seat venue will be built in Victoria Park as the major precinct for the Games and beyond, with the stadium set to also become the new home of cricket and NRL’s rival sporting code, AFL, into the future

Speaking to CODE Sports, V’landys has questioned when Suncorp Stadium will enter into the equation for a facelift, alluding to the fact that Queensland’s ability to host a grand final or retain rights to the popular Magic Round hinge on an upgrade.

“We will be welcoming an announcement as surely the Queensland government won’t forget the most watched sport in Australia,” V’landys said.

“One of Queensland’s major events is Magic Round.

“For Queensland to retain Magic Round, and have any chance of having a grand final, that is all contingent on Suncorp Stadium also getting a major upgrade.

“We have no problem with other sports receiving funding for stadiums but don’t forget the No.1 sport in Australia.

“Rugby league has to be given the same opportunity.”

he stated >> Match day events, and Suncorp Stadium upgrade in the future >> (to what degree and how much) unknown

Agree- a nice precinct - a hotel to stay in, shops, bars etc. Although they'll want to avoid a dockland's situation - that place is desolate.

oh yes Hotels shall be a sure thing, especially after the Olympics with the Athletes Village will be sold off..
Which is apparently going to be close by.

The Key Difference with Olympic Park (Sydney) and Victoria Pk (Brisbane)

Victoria Park is just outside the CBD

Olympic Park is 20k outside the CBD

so i dont see Victroia Park becoming a white Elephant as in O.P has been

Location is key. They can turn this into a new Adelaide Oval if they do it right.
I wonder if they'll try for the Optus Stadium treatment so it can host larger matches for rugby and origin.

Dont see Suncorp getting anything more than cosmetic changes now - useful for concerts in the summer that can be done at the cricket ground. (similar to the relationship Docklands and the MCG have, or the SCG/Allianz)

that Docklands stadium but the surrounding areas is soulless, the bland buildings of units remind me the old soviet communits blocks scattered round Russia and Kiev Ukraine as its a shame as Melbourne has some beautiful old buildings
