This was a great success for the AFL and the crowd looked at least 30-40% giants fans!
Titans debuted to .... 42,017 fans in 2007.. in a city less the half the size of Sydney
& they didn't even play the Broncos
the midgits couldn't even get to that mark
a disaster for the VFL

Titans!!!

are they is Sydney?
Aren't they in their own heartland??

just goes to show the fickle nature of NRL fans. They go if it's a new fad, not too wet, not too cold, not too sunny, no Taylor Swift concerts on......

Is GC RL heartland?
Where are these fans now?
The Giants market is Sydney where crowds in the low teens for 2 local teams is considered a success!

according to **** it isn't
Where are these fans now?
same question to you of the 72,694 who attended a gooses VFL game at ANZ a few years back
& unlike the wooden spoon titans .. the gooses won a GF & played in another since this crowd ?
The Giants market is Sydney where crowds in the low teens for 2 local teams is considered a success!
the giants play in a city that only a few years ago .. would have got more to a game involving ONE sydney side
then the crowd last night to a game involving ... 2
signs are bad for the VFL in our nations largest city
very very bad ............

The swans average crowd hasnt halved in 5 years like the titans has!
The swans average attendance has decreased by 20% since the year they won the GF. This is totally normal for any team in any comp. the reason they had those huge crowd is because they were near top and playing large teams who were also near top. Neither of these conditions apply to last night do they Dave.
The crowd was bigger than any home and away NRL game in Sydney for 3 years! 3 times bigger than the war of the west game the night before.

Fine, now you're being specific it's 28%, not "ova 30%" you dunce! Where did you go to school, if you even went?!
A drop in attendance from a succeful era is hardly unusual in any sport. Otherwise RL is dead and buried in many parts of its own heartland!

Dear God,
What a shocking result for the Swans v GWS matchup. I must say I'm pretty ashamed of my prediction of 50k on a warm sydney night
RD bigups to you on this one, you were by far the closest predictor of the crowd numbers. With beaussie's last prediction as sellout and everyone else predicting well above 40k we really were way out of the ballpark.
The other thing i must say was very disappointing was, well, I'm thinking about the game around 7pm and I think ahh great i'll sit back put my feet up and watch it on the box with a nice cold brewski and... to my shock I find a rerun of modern family on channel 10 and some movie called wild child playing on channel 7, followed by tom hanks in castaway. I was thinking for sure i could watch this historic event, this momentous occasion on fta tv, but alas no, it mustnt have been deemed important in this RL loving city.
I had to go without watching this occasion and to tell you the truth this was disappointing and disheartening. To be honest it was a real downer and has lowered my enthusiasm for the upcoming season...
My question to the AFL mob in here. Why?

I'm ashamed of your prediction too you dope!

Having said that you should be more ashamed of the 13k that turned out for the "battle of the west" NRL game the night before!

Footy turf wars: NRL vs AFL to win over greater western Sydney

FOOTBALL’S undeclared war is on.
The combatants aren’t describing it that way, but that’s what it is.
The opening shots have been fired in the battle between Australia’s top two winter codes, Australian Rules and rugby league, for the hearts, minds and pockets of the two million-plus people who make greater western Sydney the nation’s third biggest marketplace behind Sydney and Melbourne.
Two publicity cannonades in Sydney this week set the stage.
Rugby league launched ticket sales on Wednesday for its lone Sydney State of Origin match in June, just as the AFL was preparing for Thursday’s first-ever season launch outside Melbourne.
League suddenly has an ambassador for western Sydney in the form of Parramatta captain Nathan Hindmarsh.
Hindmarsh’s team hosts Penrith in a western Sydney derby on Friday, the night before the AFL’s opening match.
Penrith will host another innovation on April 21, an under-20s version of the hugely successful State of Origin brand.
The NRL also has a blockbuster lined up in direct opposition to Saturday night’s AFL match, with St George Illawarra hosting premiers Manly.
http://parramatta-advertiser.whereilive ... rn-sydney/
looks like the NRL are serious about defending western Sydney as RL heartland. They are scheduling ws v ws NRL blockbusters to combat the Giants games.
So what massive NRL crowd turned out to the west sydney v west sydney showdown last night? 13k
But wait, fair go, it was pouring rain!! No? It was fine? Oh.........must have been another Taylor Swift concert on.

You gooses do realize that parra are on the bottom of the ladder yeah?
I am going to wait till round 5 of AFL and get a Gage on there last teams crowds lol
I bet it will be worse then parra last on the ladder crowds who wants to bet?

VFL maths at play
my prediction of mid 30's looks like it will be spot on ... a disaster for the VFL
&
10 rnds of NRL in Sydney to beat that with some big games to come
sweet

38203
Better than mid 30's hey?
Out of interest, what's the biggest Sydney NRL attendance this year??
My understanding is this is higher than any home and away NRL crowd in Sydney since 2009. Is that right Dave??

More than 28,000 tickets for the clash had been sold as of Monday, and an ANZ Stadium spokesman said they were expecting more than 40,000 at the game.
but
not ova 40K eh ?
&
it looked about 30K for mine anyway ... so the fudging has begun already
.... &
with up to 33% of tickets sold .. freebies I'm hearing.... they were everywhere in Sydney last week ... it is a disaster for VFL in Sydney
Old Dimmerswitch is a lil worried this morning
thats it .. a piece of history .. the biggest game of the VFL year in Syd .. is over , & they couldn't even half fill the joint with
2 sydney teams playing
thousands of freebies given out
no other sport anywhere near homebush
izzy failnow playing
wow
the extent to which VFL is goneskies in NSW
is even surprising to me

I would love to see the ratings in Sydney for this one dave. :D

Were the Eels playing themselves? Surely their west sydney opposition had some fans.
The thing you keep forgetting is THIS IS SYDNEY, Rl heartland! What a ridiculous comparison! How about we wait until the storm are bottom and then compare their crowds to the bottom Melbourne team, which last year was Melbourne who averaged 31k, or try Richmond who were next with an average of 43k. The storm are averaging 14k and theyre repeatedly top!

They're up already. 88k for 7mate. Not bad at all, especially when a portion of the 200k on foxtel is added.

People don't see the big picture.
38k to the game more than enough pays the club.
Ratings Australia wide for the game pays for the set up.
