Only five AFL clubs made a profit in 2013 without the assistance of poker machines, according to figures presented to the clubs by the AFL.

And remarkably, one of the clubs that made a pokies-free profit was North Melbourne, which made a decision to avoid poker machines from its business model, and is among the smallest clubs for revenue.

The five clubs that made a profit without non-football revenue - almost all of which is from poker machine venues - were Collingwood, Richmond, West Coast, Fremantle and North Melbourne. The Kangaroos are the clear outlier from that group of five and, according to the club, made a profit of $1.3 million in 2013 as a result of running a very low-cost operation.

Even Hawthorn, the 2013 premier and one of the game’s most financially robust clubs, had a profit that was assisted by pokie earnings. The Hawks made a healthy profit of $3.1 million in 2013, but they are understood to have earned more than $4 million from their lucrative Waverley Gardens gaming venue, and have plans to earn more from their new Caroline Springs venue.

Geelong, another fiscally strong club that has excelled at all levels, confirmed to Fairfax Media that it would not have been profitable in 2013 without poker machine earnings. The Cats made a net profit of $1.2 million last year.

Carlton earned profits of about $2.7 million from its poker machine operations - spearheaded by benefactor and pokies magnate Bruce Mathieson - which helped it to record a profit of $528,095.

While the fact that even strong clubs such as Hawthorn, Geelong and Carlton were not profitable without gaming assistance, this can be misleading, because clubs say they spend according to revenue generated. Hawthorn is spending heavily in the knowledge that it has a buffer from poker machines. The Hawks and Cats could simply decrease their spending without the pokies profits.

Clubs were presented with the fact that only five had made money from conventional football incomes - read, without pokies - at a recent meeting of chief executives.

The presentation, by the AFL’s chief financial officer Ian Anderson, was viewed by some club officials as a warning about escalating costs and the precarious financial position of the clubs.

Collingwood made a massive operating profit of $5.22 million in 2013 (plus one-off grants of $11.15 million for its facility for a overall profit of $16.375 million), while Richmond did extraordinary well for a club without significant poker machine revenues, the Tigers making $3.3 million on the back of a hefty membership, gate receipts and the team’s improvement to play finals.

West Coast and Fremantle do not have poker machines and still managed healthy profits, with the Eagles reaping $4.1 million.

But the major surprise from the survey of clubs’ profitably and gaming operations are the Kangaroos, whose chief executive Carl Dilena said the club had run a lean operation that enabled it to make a profit of about $1.3 million.

The club did well from its two home games in Hobart, which industry sources suggested were underwritten to the tune of $500,000 a game, with the club also having close to 4000 Tasmanian members. Dilena said the Roos, who ranked in the bottom two for football department spending in 2013, hoped to increase their spending on players to 100 per cent of the salary cap this year via a pre-payment - paying players in advance for 2015 to reach the limit this year.

CARLTON more than doubled its gaming-related revenue in 2013 to $19.7 million, the club's annual report reveals.

The jump in revenue - up from $9.5 million in 2012 - did not result in a large profit for the Blues this year, in part because of short-term costs associated with the club's increased investment in gaming.

The report notes that "member venue costs" jumped from $7.5 million to $17 million as the club recorded a $528,000 profit for the year ending October 31.

Gaming machine entitlements for 290 machines came into effect in August 2012, and the club will make payments on those entitlements over the next four years.

However, the entitlements do not expire until 2022 and it is expected Carlton will maximise its financial return from pokies in the final five years of the machines' 10-year lifespan.


Victorian AFL clubs own 18 gaming venues and 1317 machines, with North Melbourne the only club in the state not to make money out of gaming.

Carlton's $19.7 million in gaming revenue this year represents more than a third of its total revenue of $57 million.

According to the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation, poker machines owned by AFL clubs empty more than $85 million annually from the pockets of punters.

In February, the Western Bulldogs - who own 50 machines - floated in a discussion paper on equalisation the prospect of gaming revenue above a certain amount being split between clubs.

"The growth in scale of and dependency on poker machine revenue in AFL clubs, and growing revenue differentials between larger and smaller Victorian franchises in this area, have been to the detriment of the competition," the Bulldogs said.

"A system in which poker machine profits over a proportion of gross club revenue were contributed to a common pool for equitable distribution would be a preferable model of a 'luxury tax' and might have the additional benefit of reducing the incentive of clubs to increase their own dependence and their fans' exposure to poker machine use."

Andrew Demetriou and Eddie Maguire recently came out in the press to declare war on the Federal Government’s proposed mandatory pre-commitment legislation for poker machines.The main concerns for the AFL is the growing revenue that comes from club-owned poker machines.

Victorian AFL clubs run over 2500 poker machines, which currently generate about $50 million per annum in revenue, and this number is set to double in the current financial year.

No doubt why the AFL oppose the legislation.

“To suddenly, out of nowhere, without any consultation, to have what looks like being a footy tax imposed, is going to absolutely hit football clubs right between the eyes,” declared Collingwood President Eddie Maguire.

Tony Abbott, the Liberal party’s federal opposition leader, understandably agrees with Maguire and condemns the Gillard “footy tax disaster”.



Hawthorn AFL president and former Victorian Liberal premier Jeff Kennett argues that “the Gillard government is going to wipe out AFL clubs right throughout the state.”

AFL chief Andrew Demetriou did agree that the government needed to help raise awareness around problem gambling and actually tackle that issue, but not at the expense of AFL clubs. Andrew would like someone else to pay for the problem and not in the AFL’s backyard, if you don’t mind.

There are two galling aspects to the AFL’s stance on poker machines.

Firstly, the AFL is not particularly in need of any money, nor likely to go broke any time soon because of any government initiatives, especially ones aimed to help reduce problem gambling.

The AFL has annual revenues of over $300 million, and recently signed a $1.3 billion media rights deal to make sure that its bank balance will continue to fatten.

The claims by Demetriou and other AFL figures that the government’s initiatives will harm AFL are ludicrous and quite frankly insulting to its membership, which would certainly contain a number of problem gamblers.

The second exasperating aspect of the AFL’s ridiculous complaints is that the AFL and AFL clubs pay no taxes. That’s right, not one cent of any AFL revenue goes back to the government or taxpayers. Every cent of every dollar they earn is spent on AFL, including poker machine revenue.

The AFL isn’t a charity, it’s a business. It certainly pays its executives like a business, with bonuses for increased revenue.

So why doesn’t it pay any taxes like a business?

As its annual report explains, the AFL is exempt from income tax because its activities “are solely the promotion, administration and development of Australian Rules Football”.

How are poker machines classed as solely the promotion, administration and development of Australian Rules Football? I find that hard to swallow. Poker machines are installed at AFL clubs to provide revenue for the AFL, pure and simple.

The AFL executives increased their payouts to over $5 million, based on their ability to derive increased revenues, of which poker machines played a part.

Andrew Demetriou signed off on a $200,000 cash pay rise for himself, which took his package up to $1.8 million. The charitable tax-exempt AFL sporting organisation now pays its CEO five times more than the Prime Minister bringing in the pokie legislation receives.

Certainly businesses will structure their organisations to minimise their tax outgoings, but how much
