This time zone issue is the problem the AFL have faced for years. Yet Perth is almost as big as Brisbane. Imagine your ratings if Brisbane got delayed RL every week? yet the fans there want to see it live not on delay. But showing it live means the game is shown at 5.30, not primetime.

Oh and don't try to tell me RL in Perth gets near AFL levels in Sydney. The swans rate 40-80k despite being simulcast on foxtel. RL in Perth is rating 3-16k, and probably averaging less than 10k.
Wait what, Western Aus bigger then Qld?
You got rocks in your head mate.
Friday night got 33k in Sydney just this week. Population of 7million+ and only 33k lol now that is a disaster.

Where did I compare WA and Qld? #-o

33k for Friday night was Sydney with a population of 4.5m, not NSW! #-o

FN wasn't a swans game! #-o

Massive f'up champ! #-o

Eelofwest,
You make a good point comparing Sydney friday night to Perth friday night. Sydney averages about 36K FTA friday nights for the AFL compared to Perths average of 6.4 K on friday night for the NRL. Sydney's population is not quite 3 times bigger then Perths. When you almost tripple Perths NRL numbers you get about half the ratings that Sydney gets. With some good advertising and a team of their own I could see Perths ratings doubling. The only other factor comming into play would be that Sydney really has about 50K watching the AFL friday night with PTV numbers included.

Thankyou pies for you balanced view, i see what your saying and your acknowledging that Sydney has had a team in the AFL for 30+ years and still at the level of Perth with no team no coverage. So AFL not in a good place in Sydney and Brisbane.
Thanks for your opinion, i can see you like to add to the conversation/Debate unlike Xman and Tpg. =D> =D>
One thing you did not address pies is the 30k for Friday night in Melbourne for NRL on friday night? When you compare that to Sydney and brisbane AFL ratings it makes AFL look like they are failing big time in QLD and NWS.

Perth have watched 12 NRL games at an average of 8k.

Melbourne have watched 11 NRL games at an average of 18k, and they have their own team on top of the ladder!

Sydney have watched 20 AFL games at an average of 39k, plus foxtel ratings. Their average would be well over 50k. They average 54k when the swans are playing, again with foxtel ratings probably producing another 30k.

Brisbane have watched 19 games at an average of 40k, plus foxtel ratings, which would add at least 10-20k.

Going by population, per million:

- Perth watch NRL at 4.4k

- Melbourne watch NRL at 4.5k

- Sydney watch AFL at 8.7k with foxtel ratings making it closer to 13k. The swans would rate 18k per million.

- Brisbane/GC watch AFL at 16k with foxtel ratings making it closer to 22k.

Somehow I think the AFL is well ahead of the NRL in non heartland ratings.

I still think that the AFL TV figures will continue to improve slowly in Sydney and Brisbane now that the coverage is better. I also believe that the NRL ratings in Perth and Melbourne will continue to grow, with the introduction of a Perth team and better advertising. I agree that at the moment the AFL figures in Sydney (PTV and FTA) are about three times as big in Sydney compared to NRL ratings in Melbourne and Perth per million people. Brisbane's AFL figures (FTA + PTA) figures are probabaly four times bigger. I am not a code warrior I just enjoy the banter and I am happy to acknowledge good points made from both sides. Hopefully both sports can grow in a big way across Australia because they are both great sports in their own way.

Eelofwest,
I wouldnt say that Sydney and Perth are at the same level at this stage. I would say NRL ratings in Perth are about a third of the AFL numbers in Sydney per million people (FTA and PTV). With a new team and good advertising this number will increase by a lot if Perth get the new team in 2015.

You forgot 3 Premierships (sort of) constant success and barely been out of the top 4 for the last 6 years (apart from one year). Minor premierships 4 times in the last 6 years and currently sitting well clear on top of the ladder.

Success trumps coverage by along way!

The NRL averages 4k per million outside NSW and Qld despite massive storm success!

The AFLs Qld teams are bottom yeat they are still 5 times more popular than the storm!

The swans are still way more popular than the storm.

So much for your "nRL at similar levels to AFL" crap. [-X
