Re: Brisbane Stadium - Victoria Park
Suncorp Stadium doesn’t need any upgrades, it’s fine as is. Bigger capacity crowds can be accommodated at the new Victoria Park stadium if required. The QLD government ain’t likely to spend any more taxpayer dollars on an unnecessary upgrade when there will be a bigger brand new stadium available at Victoria Park for the odd big event.

Victoria Park stadium needed

Premier David Crisafulli has confirmed he is breaking his election promise of "no new stadium." He stated that he was ready to face the political heat following this decision."I am and I am sorry about it," he said.
Crisafulli said that the state had run out of time to upgrade The Gabba before the 2032 Olympics.
"It came down to a choice, a choice between the embarrassment of hosting the Games in QSAC or a new stadium at Victoria Park," he said.
"Any other choice would have meant placing the government's political interests ahead of the interests of Queenslanders."

Re: Brisbane Stadium - Victoria Park
The the AFL now have the best stadiums across the country - next is a new SCG lol. That’s what you get when you can draw predictable and large crowds.
And I’d be surprised if they have any money left to spend on Suncorp - maybe after the Olympics.
Is this a coup for the AFL ? I think it is. The new Gabba - whilst it was seen as needed and wanted- would have resulted in a lot of short-term pain for the Lions. Now they get a bright spanking new stadium - more capacity- better marketing fro sponsorships to memberships. It’s such a win win for the AFL and the Lions.

Yeah - I’m not a betting man per se - last time I flogged another poster who used to be on here re: suns getting a bigger home crowd than the titans. This was was clearly obvious and Asif was smart not to take it on lol. I wonder if he is chuckling to himself as he said lol.

In additional good news for the AFL and Cricket, the RNA Showgrounds will also be redeveloped.
Great news for the AFLW/Lions. Even potentially a 2nd Brisbane AFL team.
RNA Showgrounds:
Events to be held: TBA
The Brisbane Showgrounds will receive an upgrade to allow it to hold 20,000 people, though no events have been confirmed for the venue yet. The Brisbane athletes' village will also be within the Showgrounds precinct.

The SCG is really in need of a massive upgrade. Facilities are awful.Fred wrote: Tue Mar 25, 2025 6:00 pmThe the AFL now have the best stadiums across the country - next is a new SCG lol. That’s what you get when you can draw predictable and large crowds.
Back on topic, the Lions and the AFL seem very happy with today’s news. Good point you raised Fred about the strong, predictable and large AFL attendance culture no doubt being a factor.
Lions' Gabba future decided as Queensland confirms stadium plan
The Queensland government has confirmed its stadium plan for the 2032 Olympics

BRISBANE is set to have a new home ground from the 2033 season following the Queensland government's announcement that the Gabba will be demolished and a 63,000-seat stadium built at inner-city Victoria Park.
Premier David Crisafulli confirmed on Tuesday the new stadium would be the centrepiece of the 2032 Olympics and then be home to the Lions and cricket after the Games.
The Gabba will continue to host AFL home games until then, before being demolished for residential development.
The Gabba currently holds 37,000 spectators for AFL games, with the Lions officially selling out nine of their 12 games in 2024.
Lions CEO Greg Swann said he was "excited" by the news.
"The Gabba has been a great home for the past 30 years, but the city has outgrown it, the Lions have outgrown it, we'll top 70,000 members this year and the venue is reaching its end of life," he said.
Victoria Park is situated 1km from Brisbane's CBD and will be the hub of an Olympic precinct that will include the athlete's village and swimming venue.
Speaking before the announcement was confirmed, co-captain Lachie Neale said he loved the "old school" feeling of the Gabba, but thought the club was moving past it.
"When we come up against some big Melbourne clubs, the Gabba's probably a little bit too small. But it's a testament to our fans and the club and the way we've built the brand," he said.
"I'm sure by the time that (new) stadium is built, I won't be around to play .. it'll be good to go and watch."
AFL CEO Andrew Dillon said he was excited about a state-of-the-art stadium in the middle of Brisbane.
"Our supporters have a strong history of travelling to games and I can't wait to get to work with Brisbane and the Government in the planning process and then in ensuring that once it is built, we sell out games at Victoria Park in the same way we sell out the Lions’ games at the Gabba," he said.

Re: Brisbane Stadium - Victoria Park
Do you think they’ll have a dedicated opening event at the new AFL stadium like they did for Optus Oval in Perth / or will that simply be the opening ceremony? I’d say the later but they may try to milk it. Either way - massive boost for AFL.

V’Landys getting slammed by RL fans for being asleep and too busy worrying about Vegas to know what is happening here in Australia.
The AFL wins again with a massive new stadium and no need to contribute a cent. lol
