Wow when we play internationals in football we get better figures than that at 3am. You are comparing a national team with a club competition.

Australia v Chile 2.3 million at 9 am Saturday morning, when many fans were looking to play/coach/watch grassroots game
Round 11 NRL total combined free plus pay national figures for a full round 2.3 yep so they can lol

the highest rated socceroos match was 2.5m that watched us play uruguay in 2005 but that didn't include regionals
since then we rated 2.2m against italy in 2006 at 1am, 2.1m against japan at 12am, 2.2m against chile at 2am, 2m against croatia etc etc etc with all the other group stage and qualifiers scattered around the 800k to 1.8m mark from 2005 to 2014. a recent example is australia vs "lowly" iraq which drew 1.6m at a nice 8pm time slot
god only knows what the ratings would be like if we played a meaningful match at a timezone friendly slot! a world cup in australia or asia would smash tv records
