I'm just going on past awards ceremonies where it is always a rugby league player who gets the sportsperson of the year award.

As we all know, the choice of sport for most Indigenous Australians is Australian Football. The Sydney centric nature is demonstrated by the fact that rugby league even gets a mention. Outside of NSW and QLD the sports is not even a blip on the radar with most people having it confused with rugby union.

The majority of Indigenous Australians live in QLD & NSW.

The State of New South Wales has the highest population of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, but Indigenous Australians form the greatest percentage of the population in the Northern Territory. At the time of the 2001 Census, the population breakdown in individual states and territories was as follows

It would be logical that the most popular sport they would play would be the most popular sport in those two States - Rugby League.

Yes they may be the official figures but you fail to take into account that in NSW (Southern NSW) and QLD (Top End) many Indigenous Australians play Australian Football. Lets not forget the code of choice for the Imparja TV network.

Would be interesting to see any figures on the actual participation rates if they exist. I think it would be reasonable to conclude that more Indigenous Australians play Australian Football. Do Indigenous Australians get to play in an Indigenous All-Stars team in rugby league?

BeAussie don't bother with this NRL loser.....We all know that Aboriginal people prefer AFL to this NRL rubbish. Wanker Widders only raised this point on the National Rapist Leauge Footy show to get a reaction....Geez this member of the wannabe tribe in not even known withing the Aboriginal communities where AFL reins supreme!

Not that I'm trying to make comparisons or anything

but if the AFL is soooo big in the rest of the Indigenous Community, then how come they don't have a Indigenous AFL Knock out competition like the Indigenous Rugby League community. The knockout (as it is known to the Indigenous community) is one of the biggest sporting events on the Indigenous calender, this year hosting 41 teams (thats not including the womens teams) or the teams playing in the Dubbo competition.

I think BA and GR should go and check it out this weekend, take some notes and start an AFL one up. Not to sure how much support you'll get in NSW, but eventually you might come up with a team.

Biggest sporting event on the calender is really strecthing it. Fair dinkum, wake up to yourself. BTW, how about those Dubbo All-Stars in the recent Australian Football Carnival in Dubbo.

I think you, like Widders ought to open your eyes and see that Australia is more than just NSW and our Indigenous football code is by far the most popular sport in the Indigenous community.

No i think scorger raises some fair points. The indigenous knockout competition is a very big event indeed. I really dont believe the AFL indigenous carnivals are anywhere near as big. Thousands upon thousands from many many different communities in nsw all participate and enjoy this event, its huge. I remember serving beers at souths leagues during one event and it just didnt stop for three bloody days! The place was packed out.

Can you tell me of a bigger indigenous event to do with AFL beaussie?

Incorret Willis. You obviously haven't heard about the All-Australian AFL team. That or you choose to ignore it. Oh and yes Indigenous Australians have represented their country in the International Rules series. A series that attracts crowds that are the envy of international rugby league.

Yes i did read the previous posts beaussie, you still havent answered my question? I can only assume you are referring to the AFL 'carnivals' they have in nsw? If this is the case im sure you'll find the rugby league knockout is a bigger event.

Answer the question for a change. I really believe you struggle to answer a question when its infavourable to what you want...

The point was the AFL carnivals are all over Australia and aren't limited to NSW. That in itself suggests to me that more Indigenous Australians play Australian Football. If it was the other way round, wouldn't we hear about these knockout rugby league competitions in other parts of Australia besides NSW?
