the AFL has more places to expand than the NRL does, the AFL HQ are even funding their own expansion sides unlike the NRL HQ does for starters. the Red cliffs Dolphins and possible new expansive in Brisbane are only a result of fear from the AFL possibly putting another side in the State, thats an indication another team by the AFL would survive nicely,
Queensland and WA are the fastest growing state & Perth could take another team easily at current levels the Eagles and Dockers are financial power houses still despite preforming poorly on field for years and dockers basically always been a running joke here
You really need to get over this obsession with Rugby League pal. This thread is about AFL not Australia's most watched sport - Rugby League. They've got nowhere to go. Tassie will add nothing. Its rusted on AFL already in a backwater. Canberra, Nth Qld or any other location in the RL states will end up like GWS - an un-loved money pit. Darwin is too small.
The only option is to put another team in the desert state capitals. They'd maybe be ok financially but that ain't expansion. Its consolidation. In short: expansion is dead in the AFL. They have saturated (infact over-saturated) any and every possible market they have. Its over.

Let's say the AFL have expanded and no where else to go re: new territories - I would think this would be a good thing - no? If they have indeed covered all marketable spaces (I don't think they have), and NRL have not - does this not show the NRL being behind the AFL on this front? For years I have heard WA and SA being referred to as the desert states and written off as meaningless due to this - when discussing which parts of the country is AFL and which is NRL. So not sure the same argument can be made that expanding into these areas is meaningful if using that same logic (I think it is). So the NRL could be seen ogf simply cvatching up - The AFL have achieved their expansion goals related to new territory - and now need to consolidate those teams where support is not high - which is GWS - all the rest are doing reasonably well to extremely well - considering they are new markets. So yes, the NRL may have more areas to expand into - and who knows they may catch the AFL in regards to revenue generated from these expansions - but still have some way to go. The AFL may be at peak expansion - allowing consolidation and growth and to deal with the mess of GWS rather than focusing on new markets. For mine, rather than focusing on new areas I think teams in SA would work fine - not an expansion - but a consolidation of an already strong market. Another team in Brisbane is feasible - but again - why. Canberra is the obvious choice if you needed another team - basically a no brainer that is complicated by the turd that is GWS. Expansion for expansion sake I don't think is wise - with the country's main markets covered in one way or another, there is no need for the AFL to expand -(Canberra the exception) - just need to strengthen and consolidate. NRL do need to expand - they have traditionally covered the QLD and most of NSW - which, whilst populated, is a small area footprint on the country - and they have embarked on this - similar to Tassie for AFL they have brought back in the Dolphins - are heading to Perth and dabbling in PNG - which is great and much needed I feel. Having a team in Adelaide and one day Tassie (unlikely) would give it a much better footprint and grow the game in tbhose areas where it is virtually non-existent at grassroots level - similar to Aussie rules in western Sydney.

You make some reasonable points Freddo. The facts are the AFL has maxxed out their expansion. The only places they have left are already rusted on AFL or smaller areas in RL states that would be loveless money pits worse than the Ginats. My prediction is once tiny Tassie joins they're done. There will be no new teams in the AFL for decades if at all ever again.Fred wrote: Thu Apr 30, 2026 10:42 amTerry wrote: Wed Apr 29, 2026 4:55 pmFFS makingdumbdumber, you're delusional pal lolololololol!!!!!!!!! RL on the other hand are expanding to Perth. Good move. The place is getting bigger and wealthier unlike Adelaide. They have plenty of expatriates from the RL states living there and an already strong junior base. Then PNG financed by govt's. A no brainer. Next expansion will be to NZ 2 probably in the south island. Then there's still the Pacific islands. They have expansion happening and more potential in the future. Adelaide doesn't really matter but if they want to put a team there in 10-15 years well and good. Its a new area so it would be real expansion.
In short: AFL is done. NRL has plenty more left.

the NRL still cant expand in to Melbourne and has little interest in other states, Temu pete wont even put the NRLS own money in to expansion sides. then you have the smaller islander countries where union is as or more popular. NRL cant go any where with out going in to Union land
Re: AFL - Where should the 20th team be based?
I think the AFL being done with expansion isn’t the death knell that some may think it is though - mission accomplished. Can focus on other areas and work on building up gws. Canberra will happen though at some time- but it’s not a must do. So where else do the AFL need to focus their attention now expansion clubs are all set. Naturally gws needs a tone of work. Buolding on a grassroots footprint in northern rural nsw and rural qld. I would think targeting northern qld that has a very good Aussie rules base would be useful - growing the local leagues and players would not be too challenging in places like cairns and to a lesser extent McKay. A few games up there also as they have done previously would help.

Re: AFL - Where should the 20th team be based?
yeah i disagree, I think the AFL if they wanted could have another 3 teams in the league bringing it too 22 Teams.
which all teams would have efficient support.
(Canberra, Cairns, Perth 3)
all of them would be bankrolled however from AFL House.
AFL will not stop at 19 teams>> they will 100% go to 20 teams not long after Tasmania have entered.
maybe within the next tv rights deal.
staying on 19 is not ideal.
(NRL are expanding without bankrolling any of them.
Dolphins
Bears
Chiefs
all 3 are self funded. (and team 20 NRL will be the same)

Re: AFL - Where should the 20th team be based?
3rd team in Perth would be rather self-sufficient in a matter of years, Fremantle and West Coast are pretty much financial power houses of Australian sport and do not own gaming machines, well pretty much cannot due to legislation hereleeroy*NRL* wrote: Fri May 01, 2026 5:53 pmyeah i disagree, I think the AFL if they wanted could have another 3 teams in the league bringing it too 22 Teams.

nonsense about the NRL teams, tax payer and gaming machines fund the NRL clubs. any team or code would be financially successful if they received all that public money like the NRL gets
It was our$13 million total investment including $8.4 million towards their $24 million stadium that gave the Dolphins a competitive edge over the other NRL licence bidders and today’s vote formalises that relationship moving forward.
