NRL Las Vegas invitations to Donald Trump, Dana White prompt backlash from White Ribbon Australia

As the NRL prepares to launch its season in Las Vegas, invitations to Donald Trump and Dana White have sparked a backlash, with White Ribbon cutting ties with the league.
Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V'Landys took to US TV program Fox & Friends brandishing a match ball with the word "TRUMP" emblazoned on it, to invite the US president in the most public of forums to two matches this weekend.
White Ribbon said fans "deserve better" and it has written to the NRL demanding a removal of any mention of its organisation's historic partnership from their website.
As recently as Wednesday afternoon, under the banner of "Respectful Relationships" in the Wellbeing and Education section of its website, the NRL said it "supports the White Ribbon Foundation of Australia", with "a national media campaign as well as education and male leadership programmes aimed at men and boys around Australia".
The reference to White Ribbon was removed late on Wednesday.
"While the NRL continues to promote their association with us, this decision by the NRL is wildly misaligned with our values and lacks integrity and respect," White Ribbon Australia chief executive Merinda March said in a statement before the reference was removed.
"We have today contacted the NRL to insist they remove any reference to White Ribbon Australia from their promotional material," March said.
Professor Catharine Lumby worked on a pro-bono basis with the NRL for 15 years, advising the league on gender and the treatment of women.
She argued the pursuit of Trump and White, regardless of whether they attend, sent a message that was "absolutely" in contradiction to the league's stated values of respect for women and "a big step backwards".
"I think there are definitely fans who will be put off and particularly let's not forget that mothers play a big role in deciding what sport they let their kids play," she said.
"Violence against women is preventable, and sport has a critical role in fostering a culture of respect," she said.

The US is one huge trailer park -Having an adjudicated rapist, felon, theif, and election denier - who tried to overturn the rightful transfer of power - and just a compete moron, dare I say kind fits - I mean it is in Las Vegas after all just to add to the stereo type They certainly know their demographic and how to target it.Beaussie wrote: Thu Feb 27, 2025 10:10 am‘Tone deaf’

In saying that Kudis to the NRL on this game - I think it is brilliant - has got me interested - not as much as last year- and I think it is a master stroke and hope it does well again this year.
