Look I love AFL but I think its pretty safe to say that the goal kicking this year has been terrible & it would not surprise me if it was the lowest % its ever been

thanks pete for your honest opinion...

NlolRL to let you know there has been numerous articles on Set shot goals.
being at its lowest point in decades..

there are the facts.

You say congestion has contributed to more points.
yes in fact this is true..

a set shot is a different matter.
you have 25 seconds to shoot at goal with no one touching you..

I know it's 3 seasons old, but here is an article suggesting goal kicking accuracy is better than ever https://www.foxsports.com.au/AFL/stats- ... 7a2c0f6c9c
HOW often have you heard someone say it?
You’ve probably even said it yourself. ‘Footy players can’t kick straight any more.’

That sentiment is everywhere — especially when Travis Cloke is kicking for goal.

So why do the stats say that goalkicking is better than ever? In fact, 2015 has been one of the best seasons for scoring shots resulting in goals rather than behinds in the last 50 years.

not just set shots.

I googled AFL set shot accuracy and couldnt find any articles from recent years. If it is lower there are some possibilities:
- zone defences are forcing leading players wider and further away, so shots at goal are at greater angles and from further out. In fact zone defence makes it virtually impossible for a leading forward to mark the ball 20-30m out directly in front, something that was common prior to these tactics.
- Dedicated full forwards like plugger and dunstall are less common these days because zone defence has made it too difficult, and forwards are now required to run like midfielders to form the zone. Dunstall and Lockett never had to do this, they were specialist forwards only.
- A reduction in dedicated forwards means more shots at goal are taken by non-specialist forwards or midfielders. Plugger and Lockett were very accurate and may have kicked 30% of their teams goals. Nowadays the scoring is shared by more players rather than dedicated forwards only
- teams spend more training time on strategies and fitness than goal kicking

 this nlol sure is sometin!!

Nlol I heard that global warming also has an effect. Players in the global warming era are expected to take shots during warmer and more humid temperatures making it harder for them to be accurate as they feel hotter and the ball is affected by the additional vapour in the air.

Players are also payed much much much more which is hard for them. They don’t need other jobs anymore and get much much more time to train. The money, It often distracts them during set shots as the additional time they have to setup and shoot provides them with opportunities to think about how they might spend their $$ on new cars and houses for example. You’re right nlol. Things are different now.

Defend ... at all cost!!!
