They keep calling themselves the sporting capital of Australia.
Is a good thing if Rugby League is showing growth down there.

Well Melbourne draw the biggest crowds in Australia for tennis, golf, AFL, soccer, cricket, & car racing. Wonder why RL is struggling despite the storm's huge success on field?

Rugby League is probably in the best state it has ever been in Victoria. Storm are averaging some of the best crowds they have ever had.
Meanwhile the sport is blowing AFL off the park at an international level.

Storm doing well (by rl standards) is great. But there is virtually no presence of rl outside of that.

The storm's average is 10k less than the lowest AFL team in Melbourne. Meanwhile the Swans are higher than every Sydney RL team

This goes along way..

Pretty sure they do have development squads, i think the problem is more on awareness and lack of clubs. The NRL should really invest if they want to grow in Vic. Start more junior clubs so kids arent travelling long distances. Over time it will grow.

There's an NRL club right near where I work (Melbourne) and the players in teams I see playing are almost exclusively of Islander background. There's an enormous amount of work to be done to make RL an attractive sports option in Melbourne. Kids who dont play AFL because they may think it's too rough are not going to play RL, they're going straight to soccer

be interesting to see how many rugby league clubs at junior and senior level are in Victoria
and vice versa in NSW for AFL clubs..
I would think AFL is at least 2 to 1 in favor

I think it is way more than 2 to 1. There is more leagues of AFL in nsw I would reckon than clubs in Victoria. I think there are about 12 rl clubs in victoria and one league that oversees it. Whereas in nsw Sydney and west Sydney have different leagues I believe with several levels in each league. Again this is from memory but I am sure an internet search will help you out.

TBH I couldn't tell you any figures.. but you do see more AFL signs for clubs in NSW than
rugby league clubs in Melbourne by a long margin..
I did say at 'least' 2 to 1 (so could def be higher)
I was in Narrabeen yesterday (for people who don't know, is the northern beaches of Sydney)
drove past the SPORTS HIGH SCHOOL
AFL POSTS have been put up in a School on both sides of the field
(crazy to think really when your in MANLY (rugby league stronghold)
