According to a Morgan poll the top participation sports for Australian adults are swimming, cycling, bush walking, soccer, dancing, tennis, basketball and netball.
Most of these sports can be played at a very casual level at almost any age except maybe elderly. High impact sports combined with high aerobic fitness like Aussie rules and RL really can only be played by people in peak condition around their 20's and early 30's.
As far as actual fans go the AFL is clearly the number 1 code in Australia. Crowds, ratings, and memberships all point this way. In this respect soccer doesnt even come close
