The A League is in pretty much still in it's early stages.
But a quality game of top level European football game shits on anything the AFL has to offer.

Player numbers in soccer really is phenomenal, 65 million players and 270 million people actively involved in the sport. Makes me laugh when you AFL clowns try to make out your sport is actually big.

They are the envy of every football code globally.

Comparably, world wide i think nothing comes close to soccer. In australia though AFL is by far the biggest sport overall i think. A major presence in every state at grass roots level, biggest tv deal in australia, can listen anywhere on radio almost across the country, biggest average crowds, biggest membership, biggest reach, biggest sporting business, ratings are **** the highest.... Sponsorship.... Etcetc. But indeed australia is but a blimp on tbe world stage.

Mate AFL would be lucky to be in the top 3 in NSW. Union, League and Soccer all have a bigger presence.

As for grass roots, soccer leaves AFL for dead with junior numbers in Australia. Has 3 times the player numbers as AFL so your wrong there that AFL has the major presence.

AFL fans try to make out they are number one everywhere. But when you look at the facts this is simply untrue.

I agree with presence in Sydney but would question new as a whole. I think Union has somewhat got lost somewhere. But still in Sydney you have a lot of people playing still. So there is a presence in Sydney although agree a long way behind rl. But remember Sydney is not nsw and AFL has a strong following south of Sydney as I think Darren pointed out in another post. Same for Gold Coast, strong following and participation for AFL.

In regard to soccer having a large grassroots across the nation, I never said it didn't! I just noted that AFL also has. Whether it is as big as soccer's I don't know nor care, the difference is AFL has along with that all the other bench marks that I mentioned. Hence my summation that it is the biggest sport in the country. Soccer does not have the crowds, TV ratings, TV deals, exposure, turn over etc that AFL/Aussie rules has. Simple as that.

If there was a match between Western Sydney Wanderes vs Manchester City or Chelsea there would be huge numbers.

As for football in general I think you AFL fans don't realise how big a sport it is here.
Has nearly 3 times the participants as AFL in Australia and would be an even bigger margin in Sydney.

Unlike the Giants you see people with Wanderes gear everywhere in Western Sydney.

Probably the main thing holding the sport back at professional levels is most of the top players end up in rich European leagues. So you never have the best of the best in the A league.

Even at a junior level it leaves every other code in the dust. Would have to be 6 soccer clubs within a 3 km radius of where I live alone.

No the major thing holding it back is it's as boring as bat shit!
Funny how the majority of the world doesn't agree, but then again i guess they haven't been exposed to the great spectacle of seagulls fighting over a chip
Yeah and most Germans during WW2 weren't nazi's either - if it's the only sport your exposed to you will always look at new sports with a critical eye. Just because most of the world play soccer doesn't make it exciting! It just means they haven't experienced something better and are indoctrinated not to try something new!
Wow that is a pretty inane comment. "they don't think it's boring because they don't know any better" LOL, hilarious.

As far as I am aware the UK has Rugby League and Union, yet Football dominates. France has Rugby Union to some extent League, they are the current handball olympic and european champions (according to kik) I hear Cycling and motor sports might be a little popular as well.

German have ice hockey, handball, basketball etc etc.

So I think they kind of do know what other sports look like, the one sport that none of them play in any capacity is AFL, or as we like to call it, seagulls fighting over a chip
I don't know what your trying to say - the fact some European countries have RL, RU it therefore makes soccer exciting??? Well those places also have AF competitions that weren't there 20 yrs ago - so that really proves my point - the immigrants in West Sydney on the whole ARENT coming from those countries they are coming from countries that have only soccer - (not too many soccer rinks in the Middle East or Africa or Asia). But nice try changing the goal posts - just because most of the world play a game doesn't make that game any more exciting or the skill to play it superior to other codes - and describing AF as you do only shows you to be ignorant of the game, I have played soccer and watched at the ground and on tv some games can be exciting - e.g. Victory v Adelaide GF 5-0 but when you get a nil all draw or 1-0 or even 1- 1 where for 80 mins it is nothing but pass backwards it is boring for people who don't follow it closely hence boring as batshit!
A 5-0 game exciting? You really have no understanding of football. no wonder you like AFL if you think goals is the most exciting bit in a game
Isn't the object of a game to score points and win??? Endless passing of the ball is boring, if that's your idea of entertaining football well no wonder you have difficulty understanding AFL!
I honestly don't know how to respond. How you could possibly think a 5-0 game of football would be more exciting than 1-0, or even 0-0 with loads of chances. The joy of football is the rarity of goals for one, you savour them when you get them. A 5-0 game of football I guess would be akin to an AFL game if 120-3?. If the only enjoyment you get from watching sport is watching 20 goals then football is definitely not for you.
Football in NSW
- Football 200,868
- AFL NSW/ACT 28,468
- Rugby League 96,041
- Rugby Union 40,685
Football has 22% more players than the other football codes combined

Good point. Watching some one take a screamer live at a game is one of the best things i enjoy about going. In rl it is also good to see a player take a grab AFL style when they kick the ball up high toward the try line.

That's one of the most boring ways a try is scored in RL imo and plenty of others, RL is a handling code more, should be put through the hands as much as possible but you can't change it, scoring usually wins so in this day of professionalism, any score is a good score (unless you are terry lamb or matt dunning) look them up LOL.

Well that's what all sports are doing you fruit loop.

From one end to the other beep it back up sarge.

Oh, of course, your sport is the only one that allows you to shank a kick and still get a point for missing the big sticks, maybe you are right, maybe the AFL does need to introduce new posts across the field too huh, plenty of scoring then aye, no boring back and forth, nup, you can legitimately kick a goal sideways, just play fumbles ball.

World domination in no time, all they'll need to do is see it once and they'll be hooked for life, just like all of Australia already huh?

WTF have you been drinking that's a fair rant - my point is continually passing the ball without even attempting to score is boring - and I don't give a tinkers what the rest of the world does - only insecure people care or even need validation by their sport being played OS........wait that sounds familiar?

I am talking AUSTRALIA WIDE. Soccer is way ahead of AFL in player numbers.. So how does that make AFL number one?

Ahh the delusionals of AFL fans is hilarious lol..

Fred, Sydney is well over 1/2 if not 2/3 of NSW population, so it does dominate figures. AFL at grass roots level in Sydney is well down the list, it wouldn't surprise me if more kids played baseball than played AFL in Sydney, it simply doesnt rate.

Look up thr AFL leagues in sydney alone. Their is a national grassroots footprint. As i said, whether it is as good as soccer i do not particuarly care, but AFL also has the tv deal, exposure, crowds, revenue etc that soccer doesnt. Are you seriously trying to tell me that soccer is as big as aussie rules in australia. ? Or nrl for thst matter?
