The good old green eyed monster. No sooner does the AFL do something positive by signing an MOU to stage a game in China than do we have some RL fans try and rain on the parade. From forums like this I suppose this can be expected but the usual suspects in the media predictably jumped on their keyboards and starting wailing and navel gazing. The AFL , and Port Adelaide, have very modest ambitions - so please no straw man arguments about what they're out to achieve. It's be an annual event and promotion, and when Chinese tourists visit Australia (1.5m annually) some of them might have increased awareness of AFL and want to attend a game...a bit like an Aussie visiting USA would go to a typical American event like baseball, or NBA or NFL. Nothing rides on this for the AFL so don't build it up to be something it's not. If over time it builds into that's great, otherwise if it goes nowhere and fades after a few years it's no great loss. What the AFL is doing is offering Chinese tourists a unique experience - something uniquely Australian...and this uniquely Australian sporting experience can not be provided by soccer, union or league.

Pales into insignificance what is being paid for Football (Soccer) in China though.
Guangzhou Evergrande valued at over US$300 million in 2014 has just spent US$185 million building a football school for kids in rural china (for KIDS)
They also spent $14 million on a football school in spain to send chinese kids to learn advanced skills.
You guys have a loooooong way to go in China

Lol football has been in China since BC.
They invented ancient football didn't they? And the English invented modern football?

RL has had a fella in China already doing the hard yards using his own money, the NRL are now going to help him out and hopefully reimburse him for all the money he used setting it up, yep an 88 year old RL fan spent his retirement funds setting up Chinese RL and has been at it for two years all the while he has been emailing and phoning the NRL asking for a meeting. They have finally agreed to help.
No green eyed monster anywhere, just a useless bunch fighting for control of RL in Aus as usual and having no fore site at all. Thank goodness for people like Paul Broughton.

Does it matter - FWIW I don't think China will suddenly put up 4 posts and buy Sherrin's but more a marketing strategy for the property developer in Australia. Either way like the saying goes "there's no such thing as bad publicity".
