Was clearly shown by the massive fall in AFL crowds in Wellington when free tickets were'nt given away. The fall was actually so bad in following years that AFL canned all future matches in Wellington.
Then you just have to look at winter sports news in NZ. There is not even an AFL section in sports media there at all. Is all Union and then League.
