True, though when they thought they had a genuine team, the local crowds turned up and showed that if stuck with over time to build a strong club on and off the pitch, they could be good value. 30k at the Adelaide oval in a wcc match I think showed the potential. The crowds dropped right off around half way thru their last season when everyone knew they were prob #1 for the chop.

Honest question, were those 2 teams a product of sl, or was there going to be expansion to those cities anyway?

Perth Reds in the SL were called the Western Reds beforehand in the ARL 12 months earlier (well a few years during their build up) they stabbed the ARL in the back and went with the sl mob, the sl mob needed 10 teams for a comp to kick off after they held back for one season in 1996. They had their clubs bar 1 in 1997 so they were after any of st george, newcastle and the basketcase (what's fucking new?) parramatta. None went over so they created Adelaide in the last minute to save face and have a full complement of teams in their inaugural season.

Then they killed them 18 months later.

*Little fact, in this day and age of women in sport, I still remember back in 1996/97 I think the CEO or "big wig" of the Adelaide rams was Liz Dawson. Good stuff, another in a long line of firsts in this country decades in advance.

The crowds dropped off because they lost interest! Not in speculation their team was going to be axed!

It also fragmented its support for years, and turned many people off the game at the time, particularly in the aftermath when the two competitions effectively merged ending the Hunter Mariners, the Adelaide Rams, the Western Reds, South Queensland and forcing mergers in the traditional clubs (which eventually shut down North Sydney), as well as the temporary exclusion of South Sydney.

Anyone who thinks Superleague and its immediate aftermath was good for league needs their head looked at.

News Ltd introduced Adelaide, Perth were originally fairly successful but no start up side will do any good when costs are jacked up 3or4 times overnight .

Obviously News LTD felt Rugby League where the major sport , its the one they chose to spearhead there PTV network !
