the AFL clubs never had that, while the NRLOL had state and federal funding for decades! if only the AFL had that

HE state government has stamped a death notice on one of Sydney’s favourite Sunday afternoon activities — watching NRL games at traditional old suburban grounds.

The days of getting rugged up on weekend afternoons to enjoy a pie and beer on the hill at the famous footy ovals are soon to be gone under plans to raise our sporting facilities to an international level.

Sports Minister Stuart Ayres said the government would no longer invest in the district venues where rugby league has been played for more than a century. Instead, money would be poured into major upgrades at Allianz and ANZ stadiums, including a retractable roof over the Homebush Olympic venue.

ROTHFIELD COMMENT: KILLING OFF SUBURBAN FOOTY A MISTAKE

Old favourites such as Leichhardt Oval, Shark Park, Brookvale and Kogarah will either be left to rot or become training facilities and multi-purpose venues for wider use, similar to Redfern Oval and Belmore Sports Ground.

SCG Trust connections in the Government I imagine. I dont understand why it wasnt used for the Olympics instead of building a new stadium.
In theory and a normal city yes the SCG would have probably been. But it's Sydney, build something no after thought!

Using the SCG for the Olympics would have been the logical choice, it would of allowed for all of the infrastructure to be up graded as well in the souranding area.

Only hurdle they may have faced may have been the dimensions of the oval, with regards to fitting a running track around it. But then again the SCG would have had up grades so it could have easily been resized

what we get in Sydney in regards to "Home Crowds" as in Belmore
where there is 99% Home Support

You cannot get this in Melbourne
as its Split in between sharing the same grounds.

As of said and I will say it again.

what other comp's in the world do what the AFL do.

2 stadiums for 9 teams. (its pathetic and takes away the Home Advantage (your district vs that district)

if the NRL do this.. it will not feel the same.
You clearly do not understand! All the old AFL clubs suburban grounds were funded through the clubs. The nrlol grounds was tax payer funded!

Understand the difference moron
never said they were not..

Melbourne miss this in there game.

What does that have to do with what I stated boofhead?

I couldn't care less where teams are playing now or in the future, I just posted my opinion about where the early clubs had their grounds before poke poke pokes came along. I suppose those big bad leaguies must have managed to steal their so called mythical supporters money some other way before pokes pokes pokes came along?

Oh, and good luck making the sharkies move anywhere, they are the only pro club in the country playing in the top league to own their own stadium.

Well except the AFL clubs DID have that. Most clubs had their grounds under a lease. Like the NRL grounds a lot of them are actually owned and funded by the city councils in their area.

The thing was in the mid 80s-early 90s the VFL/AFL introduced Ground rationalisation after deciding that the ground improvement fees could be better spent on a smaller number of grounds. Victoria Park and Princes Park were still being used up until 1999 (Princes Park until 2003) and both grounds are owned by councils. Kardinia Park is still in use today and is owned by the City of Geelong.
who paid the the infrastructure upgrade at those venues?

who paid the the infrastructure upgrade at those venues?
Generally a combination of the city coucil, state government and some funding from the VFL ground funds. Case in point is the Legends stand at princes park which the Blues are still paying off.
Yeah that was thanks to the ego of jack Elliott. That was the point I was trying to make before. The nrlol clubs has numerous amounts of funds to build and renovate the infrastructure at their clubs grounds where as the AFL club grounds did not. That's why many of the new clubs still play out of them today.

I know at windy hill each one of the major stands was built after a period of glory years, because they then had the funds. In the the 80s or 90s none of the clubs really had the money to upgrade their venues to an acceptable level for today

Sooo.

The NRL each season has had at least 28k on a Thursday night. And Belmore sports ground for health and safety will not allow anymore into the ground than they had last Monday.
