Sydney Swans have a fair chunk of fans and members in Melbourne, just as the Melbourne Demons have a chunk of supporters in Sydney.
After all, Australia's Game is our national game, played and enjoyed everywhere, so all the AFL clubs have supporters and members all over the country.
Cricket is Australia's Game.
As the AFL dominates parts of Australia and NRL also dominates parts of Australia.
No, that's not entirely correct Leeroy. Cricket is Australia's game IN THE SUMMER !!
But didn't you notice what happened on the weekend immediately following the final of BigBash ???
BigBash handed the baton to Australia's (Winter) Game, Aussie Rules and Round 1 started.
The handover from cricket to AFL was perfectly timed.
Perhaps you didn't notice. Well, pay attention next March when it happens again :D

well the NRL calls it self the National rugby League

lol get real.
it only happened this way because of the WORLD CUP and AFL could not use the Grounds.
Usually the NRL starts first about 1 week or 2 weeks before cricket season finishes in Australia for the Australian Team.

True about the game's origins.
But it certainly DESERVES to be called Australia's Game by its geographical coverage.
Is League dominant or significant everywhere? NO.
Is Rugby dominant or significant everywhere? NO.
Is Soccer dominant or significant everywhere? NO
Is Australian Football dominant or significant everywhere? YES.
AFL has become so significant in NSW/ACT and QLD, leaguies like Raider and Crapper and Leeroy et al. become palpably emotion while they rail against it, denouncing it with language unbecoming.
If AFL wasn't significant they would ignore it. And as the Swans and Giants storm towards the finals, their banshee screams will become even louder.

AFL might not be the national sport of Australia, but it is the most popular sport in Australia

I do not ignore the facts.
of course AFL has made inroads into NSW and QLD
It just cannot be called Australia's Game when so many people do not watch it.
and the NRL are very close to it.
yes the AFL is more national, but that does mean its AUSTRALIAS GAME
because the AFL Put it in there Advertising.
What is even worse you live in Sydney, and act like NSW is All AFL..
when its far from the truth..
AFL gets more Attendance gets more Sponsorship money.
But its not AUSTRALIAS GAME!

I haven't said Sydney or NSW is all AFL.
I said AFL is SIGNIFICANT in Sydney and NSW. Look at the title of this thread.
This thread is about the biggest football club in NSW. Biggest membership. Biggest home game crowds. And immensely successful at promoting sports tourism: planes arrive full of interstate fans to watch games in Sydney. The NSW economy loves it. The NSW government loves it. And AFL in NSW/ACT and QLD is growing... and growing... and growing.
Anyone who pretends AFL doesn't exist north of the Murray is living in fairyland.
