It is a competition like the FA cup in the UK. It is open to all "all age, male" football teams each state or sub state association in NSW picks the qualification path way, but basically it is done through the state based knockout cups. so all individual associations have a knockout cup, the winners of those go onto region state etc. the outcome is you get 32 teams, the 10 A League teams plus the winners, runners up etc of the state based knockouts.

So Marconi or Adelaide City have got their by winning their qualification pathways.

For instance Football Western Australia have posted their qualification entry forms
