Post hoc ... First you said yes thanks that was helpful then you said it wasn't what you were looking for ?
There are set ups like I said they will set up a 7 man backline for instance. Or a huddle at a kick in etc.
I guess the 7 man backline is something similar to what you were saying. 7 6 5 if you like.

formations are just the tip of the iceberg in football though
you have teams that play a full press, half press or no press(aka soak up the attack)
then you have transitions, how quick does a team try to counter when they recover a ball - some will go gung ho, some will play it safe and opt to keep possession over taking risks
the wanderers are a good example of a team that can soak up pressure and hit you on the counter attack when they recover the ball. this makes them incredibly difficult to break down but not necessarily a threat in attack
the victory who are playing right now, are a good example of a team that is more direct and aggressive in possession opting to press higher up the pitch and trying to attack constantly, the con in their style of play is that they play a high line of defence and are susceptible to teams like the wanderers if they lose the ball in the wrong areas
the roar are an example of a possession based team, they dominate the ball giving the opposition no chance of being able to use it by utilizing their superior technical and passing skills. weakness in that play is that if you have a player that isn't quite as good as the rest then they can be a huge reliability. also, if they aren't creating enough chances with their domination of possession then it can sometimes become fruitless
and then you have my team sydney fc! we exert a lot of energy pressing high up the pitch but we don't necessarily try to dominate possession - we rely more on countering the opposition as our front 3 are very, very fast on the counter....because we press so high up we sometimes leave a lot of gaps in behind, if one of our players gets turned or dribbled past by the opposition, then they get free reign to run at our defence...generally our whole team defends in our own half...it's been great so far but physically very tiring
there are infinite different ways to play the game which make it incredible. conflicts of styles makes the game what it is. every single way of playing has a pro and con

Hence where the manager comes in, to still play his style, BUT change enough to counter the other style of play

So any of the AFL types on here tell me. What happened to the Swans in the final, what did Hawthorn do to counter the swans, what didn't the swans do?

Hawks roughed em up early and physically dominated. Swans played like a bunch of sydfc wimps. They deserved to lose.
Styles of play? I agree with dave, what a boring and rather dumb thread. Here I'll help yA out. Every sport has different styles of play yA stoopid clown!
Jesus Christ, the intelligence levels are astoundingly low.

Rugby league is pretty much stick your head down and run into another couple of guys who try to keep you on the ground as long as possible. Not much scope there
That is why I was asking AFL, NRL is just mind numbing running into each other

Lamo to minimise sports. Like me saying soccer is just kicking the ball towards a goal and trying to get it in. Nothing much more than that.
This approach my dear posthoc shows ignorance and a lack of intelligence. Do try harder, we want the intellectual standard on these forums to be above the avg 12 year old level.
Kind regards,
King

LOL, if only Rugby League wasn't that simple, and trust me, I come from a long time player of League, there is little difference in styles or structures.
Evolutionary changes ie Hookers are no longer the smallest on the field, wingers have evolved from the weedy fast kid to stronger runners. But pretty much the same across the board.

coming from a bloke who doesnt understand there's different styles of play in RL

I think he thinks its the same in other sports too, apart from sooker and marngrook
lift yer game posthoc, you're lowering the standards here.

you're right posthoc, there have been no advancements in rugby league for decades
its the same sport it was in the 1980s, only diff is lack of mullets and longer shorts
probably one of the easiest sports to play and understand
think about it.....running straight at someone else....im pretty sure they were doing this in the stone ages as a way to determine which caveman deserves the banana
this is essentially where rugby league comes from and is why it attracts the boofheada and meatheads of the eastern coasts
gimme that banana they say
KE an 11 year old can catch and pass a rugby ball. takes very limited skills to do so, an 11 year old can also run at full pace with a ball in hand
but can you trap a soccer ball? can you run at full pace without losing control of a soccer ball at your feet? noooope
skills my friend, we're on a total different level to your primitive backwater sport
