I think a team that plays three games a year may struggle to be a global brand like the Yankees, Man U....... Collingwood etc .

I think you keep telling lies ....
Let's make up some lies about dave .... Hmmmmm lol
Pathetic.
So, to the post ... Three games a year and trying to be a global brand. The maroons are a far bigger brand in Australia then the nsw team.

Yankees play 160 odd games a year, plus playoffs, makes those 3 games seem rather trifle.
After last Saturday, and next Saturday, more people world wide will know the Wanderers than the blues and we are only 3 years old.
I remember our former chairman was looking to make Wanderers as big or bigger than Collingwood, I don't remember him mentioning the blues at all.
Every person with more than half a brain knows that Collingwood are the biggest sporting brand in Australia

so Eddie keeps trying to convince every one they are.
the Pies essentially have been a top 4 team for the last 12 years. add that the President is a media whore, who craps on about Collingwood at every opportunity.
as the pies go through a rebuilding stage the biggest brand in Australia will be Hawthorn & Essendon
Hawthorn as they have been so successful
Essendon still having been a basket case for the last decade, who are still yet to fun a final in the last 13 years, still out sell the pies in merchandise & sponsorship & have done for years.
teams like the Victory & WCS need to be noted & commended to have done well, to build their clubs & so called brand in their short period existence, they will only continue to grow. Be it that they are one of two A league teams in their cities, but have built the clubs up from nothing. The AFL could of done some ground work like the WCW did in Sydney before starting up the Giants
as for the NRL clubs

gws still have plenty of time. i do feel though they should of focused more on trying to be a competitive team from the start rather than recruit all those young players and then go for israel folau and promote the club via that way. also i personally don't think they should be pushing their club in canberra so much and should focus more on sydney...perhaps the AFL's approach to WS is very corporate esque when western sydney itself as a region is the complete opposite..i could be wrong but that was my impression from a far
i think the swans were averaging really low crowds then eventually they became competitive on the field and it took off from there - 20 years straight they've been the highest drawing sydney club i think? very impressive stuff on any level
same happened to the wanderers
once you become competitive on the pitch, you can then focus on entrenching your club in the sporting mainframe...community engagement + matchday experience is KEY, so then when you have those lean years where the team can't win for shit, the fans will still be there. the swans have been through that and came out healthy, the wanderers will go through that same patch this season - still winless in the a-league this season and probably will finish in the bottom 4...personally i think it's a good test for the fans to see how committed to the cause they really are
sydney itself as a city, is very bandwagonish, you put a strong team out there that could be a champion and the people will flock
once gws gets competitive on the field they should see improvements. with some added financial muscle from the AFL it's bound to happen, like you said about ground work being done in regards to the wanderers...AFL might of missed out on that but they'll rectify it eventually

I can understand why the AFL want to get into Western Sydney, and I think WSW shows that their is a distinct identity that a team(s) from the region can have. By 2031 a further 1.3 million people will be living in Sydney, most of those in the NW/SW area (as well as infill in the inner suburbs) basically the size of Adelaide. So that is a huge market and huge potential that if you can harness the support you get Wanderers again and probably again. BUT, their is always a BUT, the desire for AFL is simply not there in the west, the North West has pockets but I just don't see the interest, unless expat Victorians.
GWS simply do not have an identity, The AFL got pretty much everything wrong with them, they took the position in my eyes of if you build it they will come, much the same way the FFA made a mistake with Heart, GWS was simply Not the Swans.
Yes GWS is a loooong project for them, but I just don't see them being a success at all, just my thoughts on it
