The problem was highlighted in a 2010 Victoria University study that showed 42 per cent of gay participants in mainstream sport experienced homophobic harassment, discrimination and exclusion. The AFL was found to be the least-welcoming code, with 45 per cent of those surveyed saying they would not play the game for fear of abuse.
Gay rights activists insist this culture cannot be changed quietly and question why the unashamedly self-promoting AFL media machine issued no press releases to celebrate the anti-homophobia ads or the proposed Pride game. The news came to light only when Fairfax Media learnt independently of the developments.
The AFL declined to participate in this story.

Deflection alert.
A newspaper article tells us exactly what we already know & the poor dumbo tries the deflection strategy.

Look if you guys wanna talk about the fans and Facebook then start a new thread folks.
This thread is about something much worse. Ingrained institutional homophobia, as proven in countless ways, including the Victorian study. Its rife within the AFL folks. A bit more input from the AFL folk in here would be good.

I think the simple (You get a mention) fact that NO PLAYER has been brave enough to come out shows all the proof we need.
Seems every other sport in OZ crossed this bridge ages ago.
Only one is stuck in the racist Homophobic 1950s.

The Victorian study is comprehensive proof nlol ya silly pissant. As is Eddie McGuire, Sam Newman, the collingwood notice board etc.
I'm sad you seem blinded by the facts nlol. Let's open up and talk about it eh. Are you saddened by the fact nothing is being done and that the AFL could be much better? Would you prefer thing weren't this way so you just block it out because it's all too much?
Well you're not wrong buddy

it is too much and it's gone on long enough. And because it's too tough, that's why you guys need someone like me who's not so emotionally invested, can handle the criticism, is strong and stands for what he believes in, for what is right. Think of Jesus's quote and believe in me you AFL fearing folk. Come my sheep I mean peeps, "I am the good shephard".
Just 4 days to go to get ur input in my peeps.

have you actually read this study? The study participants were Victorian and 45% said they wanted to play AFL
"The most common sport male participants would like to play is Australian football (45.0%), followed by rugby (17.5%), soccer (10.0%), swimming (7.5%), lawn bowls (5.0%) and netball (5.0%). The most common sport female participants would like to play is also Australian football (42.9%), followed by synchronised swimming (14.3%) and dancing (14.3%)"
can anyone show me where the study claims AFL is the most homophobic sport?? It never says that at all. it claims AFL is the sport most wated to play

thats the article from the Age you dickbrain, which is completely incorrect. if you actually read the survey they asked 300 victorians from the gay community "which sport would you like to play but feel you cant because of your sexuality"?
what answer do you think Victorians would say? They aren't going to say RL because most Victorians dont even know what it is let alone want to play it. in fact RL wasnt even rated in the top 10 sports played by this cohort.
for the article to reflect attitudes **** the major sports in Australia it needed to be nation wide, not just Victorian, because none of the other major contact sports were represented appropriately.
