AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan says GWS Giants are tracking ‘tremendously well’

GREATER Western Sydney may have missed out on franchise player Lance Franklin’s signature, but that hasn’t slowed its progress as the newest of the AFL expansion clubs.
That’s the opinion of AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan, who said he couldn’t be happier with the way the club had established themselves two-and-a-half years into the competition.
The Giants thought they were on track to sign the game’s biggest free agent in Hawthorn star Franklin at the end of last season, before he sensationally announced his intentions to join Sydney rivals the Swans.
“I think the Giants in general terms are going tremendously well,” McLachlan said as he launched the AFL’s multicultural round at Sydney Olympic Park yesterday.
“There are ups and downs, this is a big market and as we are celebrating, culturally diverse, so bringing a game that is not a native game to these regions is a really big task for a start-up club.
“I think we understand how exciting and potentially scary this team is and I don’t think there has been a more talented list assembled, so we’re incredibly confident with how that will end up.
“I have huge confidence in our game and our product and I think with the hard work being done here the footy success will come and I’m really confident where this club will end up.”
GWS chief executive David Matthews also responded to claims from Collingwood president Eddie McGuire this week, who suggested the Sydney Swans wanted to block the move to create a second Sydney team.
“I think one of the key features of the expansion was that it got complete acceptance by the clubs at the time and it had to be voted in by all the clubs,” Matthews said.
“My recollection is every club supported the Suns and Giants as they should.
“As I’ve said you couldn’t sustain a position where there are two clubs in 54 per cent of Australia.
“A second club in Sydney makes sense and while we will from time to time have our issues with the Swans, but ultimately we will collaborate with them where we can.”
McLachlan also congratulated the Swans on what a shot in the arm Franklin’s signing had been for football in NSW.
“Lance Franklin is unbelievable for the development and growth of our code in this state,” he said.
“There is no more exciting player in Australia. People like watching him play, he’s a star.
“If anyone is going to tell me he’s been bad for the promotion of the Swans and the game in NSW I’ll take them to task any day.”

Haha, just looking at this again and it's more or less a promotion for the swans.
What has gws got to do with any of this, doesn't that big name player from melbourne they signed for 10 million (stupidest idea ever)play for the swans?
This whole article was about the swans, nothing at all to do with gws>
Maybe they need more Flags :_<> :_<> :_<> :_<> :_<> :_<> :_<> Flags.....gifted to them ..
Sorry Kitty kats ,you had your turn at being the Golden child & given everything..
You have to wait till The Swans ,then the Suns & the Midgets(if they are still around) get a turn.

the list is full of kids, given a few seasons, for the kids to have a few preseasons under their belt, they will have experience and seasoned bodies, GWS will be a force
