The AFL's secret police deal on league identities made the sporting body a criminal investigator and urged police to stay quiet about it.
The uncensored contract, obtained by AAP on Tuesday, states that Victoria Police could not comment on its own investigations into any AFL player, coach, board member or even staff without consulting the league.
The football body was also given permission to "investigate matters of illegal betting" and other serious crimes from drug trafficking and domestic violence to sexual assaults.
The police-AFL "relationship" was struck so both could investigate "any criminal activity that would be prejudicial to the interests of the AFL", the contract says.
Once the league had obtained enough evidence through its internal criminal investigations, it was obliged to hand over its files to police.
Likewise, officers under the deal were required to co-operate "by providing to the AFL information that may be relevant to any possible criminal offences".
The new details from the controversial contract enraged civil liberties advocates and an AFL club president, who see the deal as part of an unprecedented erosion of individual rights.
Liberty Victoria president Michael Pearce SC said the contract virtually empowered the league as a member of the police force.
"The AFL are basically given the role of deputy sheriff," he told AAP on Tuesday.
He said the "gag clause" also appears to have silenced an officer's freedom to speak publicly solely to protect corporate interests.

Glad I could enlighten you.

Sorry Crapper, this isn't proof. This is a news story, written with what I would suggest poor sources.
Here was the response in the Herald Sun. Both the police and the AFL deny the story is true.

There are many things wrong with the AFL, but having secret deals with the police isn't one of them. The problem with many of our RL supporters is when it comes to the AFL, they are willing to accept any badly sourced crap that comes up about the AFL and they will ignore any information that counters this. Birchgrove oval is a prime example of this.

It's not just that they denied it. The agreement that your story talks about is not legal. The police can't have an agreement to share that sort of information. They can't have an agreement to seek the AFL's approval before before investigating people. According to Ockham's razor what do you think is the most likely situation.
1. That the AFL have been given special police powers that control police and enable them to stop the police from investigating their players?
OR
2. The story exaggerates the agreement that the police have with the AFL in order to make the story seam more important?
It's not a trick question, there's only one obvious answer if you take your "I hate AFL glasses off".

You might be right. Trolling aside however most posters know that there's no real difference between the AFL/NRL commissions, players and supporters. Both codes have bad eggs for players and supporters. But mostly they do the right thing. Both commissions try to do the right thing by their code and in general have done a good job. There will always be jealousy by posters about certain aspects of each code and this is fun for a bit of banter. But some of the conspiracy theories on here are ridiculous.
