The AFL is club orientated and that's a contributing factor in my opinion to the AFL's much higher crowd average.

I think the AFL do need it, but the club factor is relevant. Even in the NRL there are rumblings along those lines due to injuries. But the sheer weight of the event overcomes that. It's as big as the NRL grand final if not even bigger, especially with the biggest hook of the lot - can New South Wales finally top Queensland this year? Back when it was played you could have said the same thing for South Australia against Victoria. Could they top them, especially in Melbourne? I can't believe that was on the back of the late great EJ Whitten only. He only wanted Victoria to win. It took the passion of SA to overcome that, heading up by someone who was just as important - Neil Kerley. This could have been maintained as a legacy. One could put a case that the equally great late Artie Beetson carries a similar legacy from the beginnings of the rugby league version, even though there have been many others.

It is a great money spinner, TLPG, and a ratings king as Raiderdave rightly pointed out.

When it comes to money spinners during the home and away season, ANZAC Day Collingwood v Essendon holds it's own. The crowds at a lot of the MCG games are huge, with many of them outdrawing thugby league State of Origin purely because the MCG holds more people than the Olympic Stadium. The only time club thugby league games go even close is during the finals and even then it's usually only grand final day.

Sorry - I'll take club games in the AFL over AFL State of Origin any day of the week.
