It's a great number for an area that isn't strong in footy. The Mackay AFL has been active since 1970 and has ebbed and flowed, but I think they've done some good work on the venues in and around Mackay. So it's highly likely that there were many undercover. Seeing photos or videos never tells the whole story. You have to be there to know. And even then you might not get it right. I thought there were 10,000 at the Parade once (Norwood's home ground in Adelaide) but the official attendance was only 7,000 or thereabouts.
So we have to rely on the official numbers. There is nothing else.
