According to the NRLs 2013 annual report, rugby league in the northern territory features 2,112 players in 102 teams in 15 clubs.
According to AFL Northern Territory it has 5,497 people playing senior club football, with the number blowing out to 9464 when junior and youth clubs are taken into account. This number does not include school football (another 13,700), Auskick (abnother 4,700) or nine a side.

playing numbers mean nothing
Soccer is the definitive proof right across the land.. people play what is easy & safe to play ... RL is a hard game to play & has a reputation for being dangerous.
but people love to watch it as it is a great gladiatorial sport.
& this was about what Darwinites watch
what they prefer
what is popular there
& that call was made by Ch 9 years ago
Darwin is an RL town these days & becoming more so
also
our figures wouldn't include schools participants either or touch or tag players
those RL figures would be over 15K

of course failuredave
gladiatorial
a bunch of fat blokes with selfe steam issues banking in to other fat blokes with the same issues, is what people prefer to watch.
just because you prefer to watch that, doesn't mean every one else does
you claim the numbers don't mean anything but even though its the proof.
but expect every one to go by that a channel nine executive said, its called promoting your own product.
2005 was when near the end of the broadcast rights, and where still recovering from being broke earlier in 2000s. they had no money to compete with the next deal. why show a product that you know that you will have in the near future, channel 9 was only looking after their best interest for the long term
