most of those leagues stretch for over 100kms, lol the north coast league stretches over 300kms (virtually melbourne to albury). when you have a league that basically covers the same area as a state in Australia, this hardly shows any significant growth, well none to brag over.

Haven't included Sydney Leagues, Canberra Leagues, Riverine etc etc. My point hasn't that AF is the most populous but that it exists and is far from an insignificant concern - when I was young AF at a junior level on the North Shore comprised teams from Baulkham Hills to Glebe to Paramatta even though it was meant to be just the North Shore and only about 4 leagues across Sydney (I think Nth Shore, George's River, East Sydney and Western Sydney). Now there are 4 divisions in Sydney Harbour Red, 1 division in Sydney White, 1 in Western Sydney - which means there has been growth (slowly) but growth non the less - a lot of those country junior comps (Northern Rivers, Central West, Illawarra and Sth Coast to names a few) just didn't exist at all when I was young. They may stretch over large distances but they exist where before they didn't - that's my point.

Well I think we can put to bed the whole issue of AF being on the decline clearly 28,468 registered players in NSW is not irrelevant it's almost a 3rd the number of RL registered players in their heartland state - as opposed to RL in Vic, SA, WA, Tas and NT not even cracking 10,000 less than half and just over a third of NSW alone!

Good link. So AFL has about 1/4 the registered players that League has in NSW. Our close to 10 times the registered players in NSW that league has in Vic. Hopefully league can get off their arse and close the gap with more grass root funding.

Afew issues with that data swans, the main one is that the figure for registered football players in NSW is missing 50 thousand. that amount does not include the registered players in the Northern NSW federation (cos football is so strong in NSW the state has two federations FNSW & NNSWF), total of 250K registered football players in NSW, to make it compareable to the AFL figure i need to add 15K from ACT so total of 265K.

Including the ACT registered rugby league players only increases its figures by about 5 thousand so thats no biggie.

When looking at the figure of 28.5K registered AFL players in NSW and ACT without delving into the figures it looks good, but the vast (i mean VAST) majority of that 28 thousand would be from the areas in NSW that borders with Victoria which as you would know swans has been AFL territory from day dot. taking away the registered players from those areas (as there not expansion markets) and thats when the real picture is seen. 7000 in sydney metro and id guess even less than that between NSWs central coast and tweed heads.

1st not really disputing anything about Soccer/football That was the figure from Football NSW strategic plan not AFL

2nd it doesn't break down where they come from just that they are NSW registered players.

Lastly the point of the post was to disprove AFLCRAPPER's suggestion there is no meaningful presence - you'll see the opening post was about total participation is a lot higher with Auskick figures - he kept asking for the number of registered players - I gave it now he has gone silent.

It's not being suggested in any way that AF is a dominant code just that the health for an expansion marked is in good shape.

the expansion market is in ok shape at best, and im not just saying this with some anti AFL chip on my shoulder, i honestly believe it is at a crossroads.

the two new expansion teams have entered into a sporting landscape where in GWS's case they entered a market without the sufficient levels of demand and interest and in the case of the SUNS, they have entered a market that is now over saturated.

The AFL has made claims that AFL participation and actual registered players has grown substantially in the last 5 - 10 years in sydney and western sydney and believed the time was right for an AFL francheise to be based in Western sydney. If the AFLs claims were true then wouldnt it have made more sense to bring in the team in say 10 years time?

these new AFL participants from western sydney would be largely or primary school age when introduced to AFL through auskick and if the last 7 years has seen increases in player numbers, it still means the children who first started would be around 15 or 16 years old. so basically some primary school kids and there parents and some teenagers in an area with 10 years max of growth of AFL from virtually nothing was the right time?

It was a rushed descision, the market was not ready, interest in GWS and AFL were mediocre at best, if they waited maybe 10 or 15 more years then i think there would have been the very minimum interest in western sydney to warrent investing in the area. the problem with this though is all the while GWS are doing their upmost best at destroying their image in sydney with poor results and poor descions made off field, and without the proper amount of interest for two teams in sydney, GWS have canaballised a large chunk of metro sydney where the swans would have picked up the small proportion of AFL fans in the area.

I do not think the brisbane/goldcoast corridor is big enough (in terms of AFL support) for two teams. the gold coast is the better location for an AFL team as it contains a much larger population of more recent arrived ex-pat southerners, a younger demographic and less spread out. The Brisbane lions would have relied on the gold coast area for a percentage of its supporter base, as well as sponsership and corporate dollars.

the suns off the field look to be in better shape than the lions but is the AFLs massive investment $ masking things? 1 team will need to go if the AFL seriously wants gold coast or brisbane to stand up on their own two feet and not need handouts to survive well into the future.
