Well I wasn't concentrating on crowds so much as I was the revenue. I also follow two teams - both Bulldogs. Canterbury and Footscray.

I saw that Wookie made a good point
2012 AFL revenue 425 Mil
2013 NRL revenue 330 mil

2012 AFL Tv rights = 221 mil
2013 NRL TV rights = 220 mil

That means NRL only has 110 mil from other revenue streams where's AFL has 204 mil - that extra 80 mil is from everything associated with larger crowds hence the NRL needs to close this gap something which will be hard to do in 5 yrs - that's my point!

Adamj1300 I happen to know that Canterbury is trying to vary it's revenue base away from a reliance from poker machines. We all know that is socially unacceptable. It's strange how in recent times AFL clubs have gravitated towards it, especially since poker machines were legalised in Victoria.

Swan4ever, I can tell you that if the NRL crowd average goes up and more importantly the AFL crowd average goes down, that 80 million difference could disapate rather quicker than you think. I'm not saying it will happen. I'm simply saying it's mathematically possible.

Of course ANYTHING is possible but I doubt that AFL averages will drop that much - NRL must have venues where a sell out isn't 20k. That's the only way they can close the gap!

You're forgetting the second team in Brisbane and the Perth team. That will increase revenue even if the crowd average stays the same or drops as it did in the AFL with the admission of the Suns and the Giants.

the VFL needs every cent of that extra 80 mill to bail out its failing clubs
it barely has anything left after its paid out their failing operations

Of course but over time GWS and GC will increase - with the addition of the new Perth stadium 60k capacity and Adelaide Oval averages will rise.

AFL clubs talk up community leadership while fostering pokie addiction

With a poker machine addiction now embedded in the finances of AFL clubs, it is legitimate to question the league's self-proclaimed role as a champion of social responsibility.

Certainly, some people believe football's link with the pokies is damaging the community from which it draws its millions of supporters.
Carter, a former league commissioner, agrees that AFL football, as a self-proclaimed leader in social responsibility, has to come to terms with its reliance on gambling sponsorships and poker machines.

''You are pointing to what I think is a massive inconsistency in the [football] industry. You watch the Brownlow and you are constantly plastered with live odds. They have finally cleaned up their act at the stadiums, where you were getting live odds and invitations to bet all the time,'' he said.

''We, as AFL clubs, don't like that. And none of the clubs like the industry's dependence on it at the moment. The pressure from outside is good. However, I've decided that the most constructive example to set, and the impact on the community, is to show you can run these businesses properly without extreme damage being done to people. That's where I've landed and I've convinced myself of that position, rightly or wrongly.''

Even though he is no doubt genuine when he says he is keen to see poker machine reforms, such as $1 or $2 maximum bets, the problem with Carter's argument is that he's portraying a competition that generated about $425 million last year in ticket sales, television rights, merchandise sales and sponsorships as a helpless victim being swept along on an avaricious corporate tide.

''The profits we get from the poker machines are critical to the club's survival,'' Carter said.

This week The Age reported that the 1317 poker machines in nine Victorian AFL clubs last year drained $85 million from the pockets of customers, a good proportion of whom are football fans. They would also make up a fair swag of the gambling addicts who, according to the voice of the anti-pokies movement and World Vision CEO, Tim Costello, contribute 40 per cent of this revenue.

Geelong, which drained $9.6 million from users of its 180 poker machines, is a club torn between its social conscience and the desire to maximise corporate opportunities, as was made clear to me this week when I spoke to the Cats' president, Colin Carter.

Only two clubs – the Brisbane Broncos and North Queensland Cowboys – can claim to be financially self-sufficient from footballing revenues – sponsorship, merchandise, gate receipts and the NRL grant. The other 14 clubs all require regular cash injections from between $1 million and $5 million from supporting leagues clubs or generous backers just to break even. This is not sustainable in the long run.

In recent years Newcastle, Wests Tigers, Souths, Penrith, Cronulla, Gold Coast and Melbourne have faced financial difficulties that threatened their existence. On each occasion new funds, a revamped ownership structure or, in Penrith's case, an administrative structure, were put in place to secure survival. The same vulnerable environment exists with virtually all clubs except the Broncos, undercapitalised as standalone entities. This means most football clubs are not financially robust enough to sustain any significant setback. You only have to look at the situation at Cronulla where the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority investigation could result in massive legal bills to comprehend the tenuous situation. Newcastle, Cronulla, Wests Tigers and Manly are under financial stress and may require support from the NRL at some time in the next few years.

As NRL side Gold Coast Titans teeters on the brink of survival with debts of up to $35 million, many other football clubs around Australia are struggling financially.

The newly installed independent commission to run rugby league has appointed auditors to look into the situation at Gold Coast, which racked up most of the debts from building a Centre of Excellence adjacent to its Skilled Stadium home ground. The building has been plagued by court action.

But Gold Coast is not the only NRL club with financial difficulties. Just about all clubs are reliant on annual grants from their licensed clubs, while private owners have to dip into their pockets to fund the annual operating shortfalls.

The listed Brisbane Broncos are a rare success, recording a $1.36 million profit from revenue of almost $29 million in 2011, and paid a dividend to its shareholders.

Do you ever get sick of being wrong?

again
an article published prior to the new broadcast rights deal & the extra 3 million a year in grants given to clubs from last year you moronic halfwit
the club bosses bit was also prior to the deal struck increasing the cap by 3 million

just like I said it had   :(/ :(/ :_<> :_<>

the Titans article is even older
newsflash piss flap
they have since sold their centre of excellence ... & are now debt free :\: :\: :\: :\: :\: :\:
they now hire it back off the new owner ( a multi millionaire fan of the club)
for $1 a year

also
none of those 14 clubs not making money would have had losses of 3 million plus
not one .....
the Raiders had one of only about 200K , & many had losses around the same
heres a maths equation for you

add 3 million
then take off 200K

whats left shithead :-k

NRL clubs are now mostly in fine shape financially & will remain so provided they show some fiscal responsibility & do not live beyond their means
while unfortunately
the horse has bolted for most VFL clubs
they are completely committed to their massive budgets .... & are finding it harder & harder to raise the revenue to service them :-k

VFL
in massive trouble
