Expanding means covering everything - not just bits and pieces. Expand or die. AFL is expanding. NRL is not. It's over flooding established areas with too many clubs. A second Brisbane team will stiff worse than the Giants.
a second team in Brisbane will be awesome, it will only bring the Broncos crowds down, to the pitiful averages of the other teams :

Perth ..bid...with interest by a private consortium.
Wellinton NZ ..BID.

a team out of perth would be interesting, as the only way a NRL clun can survice is buy having a gigantic leagues club filled to the rafters with pokes! as the rugby club never makes a cent!

seeing the fact no place outside the Casino can have pokies, the team has no chance of surviving :(/ :(/
but please NRL attempt to expand, Australia will be laughing at you [-o<

The AFL have expanded into the most populous areas of Australia. Theyre not going to expand into regional areas. This makes weak teams with poor following and would weaken the entire competition. The AFL will continue to expand into the regions where the populations are growing, the metropolitan areas. As cities like Adelaide and Perth grow they will increase teams. The NSW and Qld teams will consolidate, Tasmania will enter.

Too true. Theyll end up with more teams the calibre of the panthers and raiders, struggling for following and finances. The NRL crowd average will plummet to A league proportions. Oh joy

Re: EXPANSION THREAD.NRL V AFL

As far as expansion goes for the AFL - Tasmania and Canberra for sure. And once the new stadium is built in Perth I think a third team will work there. But that's a few years down the track. Right now, the AFL will try to make West Sydney work. I think most members here know that I am against it but what's done is done. In fact I sort of hope the effort harms the AFL's bottom line in order for them to get the message that the local competition needs to be of a higher calibre than what it is. The NEAFL has helped a little, and I'll be following the efforts of the Hills Eagles and Sydney Uni closely this coming season. Those two have to start really competing with the stronger clubs from Queensland and NT Thunder, as well as the ACT.

I will say this though. The AFL is in a far stronger position to expand than the NRL is. And that's their own fault for not developing the game properly outside of New South Wales, Queensland and maybe the Northern Territory. The Sydney AFL competition was a lot bigger when the Swans arrived in the harbour city than what the thugby league comp in Melbourne is for a start. The only reason the Storm have been successful was because of their spending, which of course brought them into conflict with the salary cap as we all know. And even then they aren't pulling the sorts of crowds the Swans have done in Sydney.

An NRL side in Perth will be as bad for the NRL as West Sydney would be if the AFL didn't prop them up. The market is not there to support an NRL team. That's why the NRL is looking towards New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. Because they have nowhere else to go. Could the AFL work in PNG and NZ? Not in the short term for sure, but the ANZAC Day games in Wellington are a start. The trouble with both is that thugby is strong - union in NZ and league in PNG. Having said that, there have been some PNG players who have donned jumpers in AFL Cairns and support is strong in PNG even if it's not number one. Just like NSW and Queensland. But the great game of football is there in substantive numbers.

I know which game I'd be supporting for a great future in Australia if the grass roots is anything to go by.
