AFL boss Andrew Demetriou must resign or be sacked following Essendon saga

FOR many years now, the AFL has held itself up as the benchmark on which all other sport is judged.

While rugby league has been pilloried for being the poor relation of its much richer, more attractive cousin across the border, the AFL has been smug in its superiority. There has been a sense of snobbery from head office and beyond - an aristocratic self-belief that the AFL has a better quality of administrator, player and fan than any other footy code in the country.

With all of that comes the sense that somehow you are bulletproof, that you self govern and, ultimately, you make your own rules.

The code's boss, Andrew Demetriou, is an independently wealthy man who took the job on a decade ago after ruling the player's association. In all of that time, Demetriou has rarely admitted he is wrong. He has been applauded within Victoria for fostering a sense of the boys' club, fostering a heady, stuffy atmosphere in Melbourne's boardrooms and beyond to the footy field.

Now, though, the very thing that made the AFL so immensely powerful and wealthy is precisely what may bring it all crashing down. I believe Demetriou must resign or be sacked, as should his chairman, another former player, Mike Fitzpatrick.

A Royal Commission into the Essendon doping scandal is now something that must be seriously considered at the highest echelons of Government.

AFL boss Andrew Demetriou has strongly denied an offer was made to James Hird to encourage the former Essendon coach to accept punishment for his involvement in the club's ElephantJuice scandal.

This is by no means a dramatic, or lofty, opinion. The AFL receives millions of dollars every year from the Federal Government. It is a signatory to the ASADA and WADA codes, and therefore accountable to its stakeholders to maintain an honest and fair sport.

In recent months, the accountability and integrity have been sacrificed in dramatic and deceitful style. In their desperate attempt to run a finals series without controversy, Demetriou and his cohorts swept just about everything under the carpet in a process that was, at best, cynical, and at worst, desperately untruthful.

As of yesterday, Demetriou continued to deny any deal was struck with suspended coach, James Hird. He also insisted, vehemently, that Hird was not being paid while serving that suspension. This is a lie. Hird, the man who oversaw the doping program at Essendon, is receiving his monthly salary and has not been found guilty of a single misdemeanour.

With utter disregard for the rules of their sport, Demetriou, Fitzpatrick and a bunch of Essendon suits defied all convention and struck deals that were never, ever aboveboard.

Along the way, they asked the head of the Australian Sports Commission, John Wylie, to act as a go-between in the last minute, desperate deal making with Hird and three other Essendon officials. There was no way this was going to court, and there was no waiting for a final ASADA report.

That Wylie agreed to take the role on is in my view a disgrace in itself, proving that the men who do AFL business do so with a view that they are the law makers and immune from normal codes of conduct.

Wylie is in charge of all sports funding in Australia, has struck deals with a company of which Hird is a part owner and has intrinsic links with ASADA. That held no consequence as Demetriou, Fitzpatrick and Essendon chairman, Paul Little, raced to a speedy and flawed conclusion, leaving the AFL's integrity in tatters.

While the NRL has waited patiently for ASADA to do its job, and conducted its own above board investigation into the Cronulla doping saga, the AFL pushed through, making their own rules and thumbing their noses at anyone who placed them under scrutiny.

I will never forget Demetriou shouting down the phone at me, denying a deal had ever been struck with the Australian Government to get the Essendon players treated more leniently than the league men facing similar charges.

That deal may have been forced off the agenda, but it appears from the Hird negotiation, that other secret arrangements did exist. That the country's highest ranking sports official in Wylie thought it right to become involved proves to me that this lot need to be investigated at the highest echelons of the judicial process.

To this day, not one official or player has been found guilty of a single breach. 4000 injections were administered over a 12 month period. That is a betrayal of the playing group, but more importantly, the legions of fans who turn up every week expecting to see fair play and a level field.

They think they can ride this out with daily denials. That is how Demetriou and his chairman do business. What has transpired places them in an insidious position and makes their boardroom deals look like the highest form of deceit.

It is time for Tony Abbott, sports minister Peter Dutton and Justice Minister, Michael Keenan, to intervene. If we thought what the Labor Government told us in February was bad, the AFL outcomes are far, far worse.

All he claimed was a deal was never struck, which was correct given they were in negotiations at the time.

Hard to see past AFL spin over supplements scandal probe

Date
December 8, 2013

Tim Lane
Columnist

With Mitchell Johnson's pace dominating the Ashes series and Warnie's best work now done in the commentary box, spin is in short supply. But have no fear: modern footy administration is more than capable of filling the vacuum. AFL boss Andrew Demetriou rolled up the sleeves during the week and showed that, as well as having a handy leggie, he has a wrong 'un, too.

Back in mid-September, Jacquelin Magnay, an experienced and respected reporter of international sporting affairs, wrote with certainty in the News Corp press that: ''ASADA officials are preparing the legal paperwork to issue infraction notices to at least seven AFL players and officials …''

For Essendon and the AFL this foreshadowed a deeply concerning development to the ongoing supplements scandal. Not surprisingly, Demetriou was soon asked about it.

Speaking on Fairfax Radio, he responded: ''It is the first I'd heard of it, so what we did do was check with ASADA [the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority] and representatives of the federal government and they both assured us that they were unaware of anything of that nature.''

Fast-forward to the past week when discussion about infraction notices has occurred within a different context. Extraordinary claims of an AFL guarantee that sanctions would not be imposed on Essendon players were met with a differently spun Demetriou delivery.

''There is absolutely no guarantee,'' he said. ''We have been very clear and transparent in this, that this is an ongoing matter for ASADA. They have said very clearly that they left the case open, that they plan at some point in time to talk with Stephen Dank and whoever else they plan to talk to, and on that basis the matter is still open.''

For the AFL, this was a particularly uncomfortable component of the week's coverage. The accusation that the football administration could, or would, seek to exert any form of influence over the matter of infraction notices and sanctions is devastating.

Clearly, a slew of suspensions issued against Essendon players would represent a catastrophe for the game. The reputational and financial damage would be enormous. But this is a country that has long demanded of others the highest standards on the treatment of doping in sport.

That we adopt those standards ourselves, no matter the consequences, should be non-negotiable. Anything less would place the administration responsible in the category of cycling, weightlifting, athletics - even Olympic - administrations, which Australians have caustically and contemptuously criticised for their failures in the area.

This is a part of what is proving to be a disastrous issue for the AFL. And it has no one to blame but itself. The more that emerges from the Essendon supplements story, the stronger the impression of the football administration's culturally entrenched inclination to seek to get what it wants.

Protocol-be-damned if that's what it takes.

In this case, it appears to have felt the need to produce an outcome it regarded as satisfactory within a certain time limit; namely before this season's finals. And evidence continues to mount that, from the outset, it has regarded as a priority the protection of Essendon's players from sanctions.

These twin issues have embroiled the chairman of the Australian Sports Commission, the respected John Wylie, in the controversial story. And they continue to raise questions about the judgment and performance of ASADA throughout the affair.

The nature of Wylie's involvement, first reported by Roy Masters in Fairfax Media, cannot but be questioned. The public is entitled to ask why the chairman of Australia's peak sports administrative body would seek to negotiate an outcome in a doping case under investigation by ASADA.

Many have also asked why ASADA - a body which it goes without saying must remain disinterested within its investigations - would allow a sports administration to be at something closer than arm's length to an important case.

For, while strictly speaking, the AFL should be a disinterested party, the reality is that it has an enormous organisational, reputational, and financial stake in the outcome.

Demetriou has described the parallel ASADA/AFL inquiries as a template for all sports into the future. I would venture to say that most with an interest in sports tainted by doping would be horrified at this possibility. If nothing else, the experience of the past nine months underlines the need for total transparency and independence in such investigations.

For without them, how can justice be seen to be done?

Perhaps Demetriou and his chairman Mike Fitzpatrick don't grasp the absolute requirement for global public confidence in the integrity of anti-doping investigations. If they do, perhaps they don't get that just because they say the AFL is capable of acting in a disinterested way, doesn't mean the public believes it.

I would assert there is a growing crisis of public confidence, and just because the AFL says it is ill-founded doesn't mean it will go away. Certainly, as with Australian cricket in the post-Warne era, spin alone won't do.

have you ever seen such delusion & denial

anyone with an ounce of impartiality can see the VFL & its fat slime bag CEO have acted in the most inappropriate manner possible
bordering on illegal

Roy Masters was laughed at when he broke a story suggesting the VFL was interfering with the investigation to get their players off
it appears he was right .. dead right
the Cronulla NRL clubs stone walling of ASADA investigation pales into insignificance when compared to this attempt by a codes governing body to manipulate an outcome [-( [-( [-( [-( [-X [-X [-X [-X [-X [-X [-X
that is as disgusting as it gets

except where the VFL is concerned & they honestly believe they are above it .... that is doesn't apply to them
the arrogance of this organisation is vomit inducing & what we leaguies are always pointing out to the brainwashed morons who follow the fumbles n bumbles
its about time they sat up & smelt the coffee

heres what should happen
the entire Essendon clubs roster given the maximum 2 year ban along with the Coaching staff as this clubs program was a systemic breach of the law
now, those players have the right to sue the Club for those 2 years of lost earnings & damage to their personal reputations as they were told what they were doing was legal by the club.
Essendon will be bankrupted by these proceedings & be taken over by the VFL but have the playing strength of the Midgets for the next few years & it may take them 5 to 10 years to be a force again.
Dimmerswitch & several other VFL head honchos to resign

Cronulla to have the same happen to its 13 players who also engaged in similar activity .. including the captain of NSW Paul Gallen who will sit out the next 2 years
again
these players will sue the club & force the club to fold
they will be relocated to Brisbane to become the Brisbane Sharks as was reported earlier in the year

this is most likely what will happen
a mess
a fucking mess

but one both games will hopefully learn from.

ASADA stated in August they had insufficient evidence to charge essendon players, unlike Cronulla where the evidence seems indisputable.

in one word
yes
even the pro VFL Victardian press are questioning the slimey shenanigans & the suspect activities
in light of the disgraceful unethical behaviour of the VFL & the suggestion that all manner of secret deals were sought
whos to say this wasn't one of the .... manipulated outcomes 8-[

otherwise why would the VFL still be concerned about it
Clearly, a slew of suspensions issued against Essendon players would represent a catastrophe for the game. The reputational and financial damage would be enormous
of course Essendons activities were illegal & in breach of ASADA & WADA codes
they essentially as a club .. did exactly what 13 Cronulla players did as individuals ..... theres almost no difference
because the spot light is on the VFL's attempts to pervert the investigation & certainly the penalties
the investigation will have to be re opened & the VFL told not to interfere this time .. like they did last time [-( [-( [-( [-( [-X [-X [-X [-X [-X

Xman You know as well as I that the interim report was not about charges/names or infraction notices.
It was soley to satisfy Vlad & give him reason to boot Essingbong out of the finals.
The Interim part should be a good clue tat the investigation is ONGOING.
