No one knows about aussie rules internationally.
Simply not true, but their knowledge isn't deep.
pHyR3 wrote:
Least everyone knows about union/league.
People have a knowledge about Rugby but very few know about the distinction between RU and rl.

I think league can channel that into league support.
And there's your main problem - living off the coat tails of other sports.
pHyR3 wrote:
Despite union being more prominent internationally, league is not far behind.
The RUWC has prominance all around the world.
The rlwc is unknown in half of Australia.
pHyR3 wrote:
Definitely not as far behind as AFL.
The AFL WC is grown from nothing into a series that has more competing countries than a number of football code WCs in a very short period. The standard rises each year yet the teams are very competitive in the divisional structure. I see a great future for AFL internationally.
Nice try Cos.

RUWC has prominence all around the world you are right. But what does the AFL Cup have? no one in australia even knows about it except a couple of diehard fans.

It goes, Fifa > RUWC > RLWC > just about anything > AFL Cup

And you know how I know that? FIGURES FACTS AND FIGURES. 400-500 THOUSAND people going to the RLWC in another country pretty great. Hopefully we can catch up to union, maybe not. RL did it in australia and union is by far the smaller sport now. Maybe in 10 years league will have a greater presence in NZ. I mean we are already seeing it in 2013, more players from there than ever before including SBW, a far stronger RL side than 2008 and 300k people watching an NRL GF that had nothing to do with them. Also i'm sure similar figures for SOO I II and III.

that my friend is international growth. What has the AFL got? more countries in a meaningless comp that has no requirements to enter as long as you're not aussie? nice one.
increasing participation numbers from 10 people to 50 people? nice one.

I couldn't care less if other countries like AFL. AFL is number 1 in this country and has been for a long long time. We kick arse on ratings and always have that's why nrl people try and manipulate them at every turn. Add regionals they say... Which are difficult to accurately count ... Look at our pay tv figures though .. Then AFL wiped the floor with them when on pay with all games.... Add Nz ... Despite the argument being the most dominant sport in this country ... It seems every time they get wiped in the ratings they find another excuse. Then crowd numbers ... Terrible...... Oh but it's a TV game .. People don't go. Memberships ... Oh it's not traditional . Sponsorship ...AFL gets heaps more for theirs ... And the clubs too. But we will hear a manipulation of why that is so ??? The one thing It has is SoO ... As a marquee event ... And they use this to say how everyone loves rl. What Aussies love is an event .. Particularly sport, Melbourne cup, Olympics, works cup qualifiers etc. only in qld and nsw does it get a build up and is there discussion a week after the games. But I'll give you that the nrl has a great marquee event that the AFL doesn't.

Right, so if aussies love events so much then why don't AFL GFs outrate at least ONE of the origins?

And we smashed you in ratings from around 09 to 12 INCLUDING REP GAMES BECAUSE THAT IS RUGBY LEAGUE.

took a dip this year and you guys are crowing about it, i guess you should since it's been quite a few years since you beat us. but once the most popular clubs in the NRL do well then you'll get smashed again. Imagine if collingwood, essendon and hawthorn made up the bottom 3 one year. You can bet crowds would drop and so would ratings.

AFL is to Australia what nfl is to the u.s. nrl is more akin to what ice hockey is to the u.s.

Australia tunes into marquee events . I hardly think horse racing is our national sport yet Melbourne cup stops a nation

An ever improving position.

RL overtook RU in Australia because it went professional.
It arguably went further ahead when the NSWRL expanded into NRL.
But since RU went professional and Super League was developed RU is closing the gap.
The RUWC gets bigger whilst the rlwc is shade of it's former glory and irrelevant to most of the world.

It has an ever improving competition that is tightly run.
Keep saying "the rlwc is bigger" until one day you'll find that isn't the truth anymore.

You do realise rugby union is broke in Australia
"The Victorian game may be the best game of football, but if it is so manifestly superior, one would fancy it could plead its own cause, and not require advertising like a quack pill."
