Oh my god after 5 months the NRL has finally acted to ensure that players co-operate with ASADA - something the AFL doesn't have to do as players, clubs and the AFL ALL have the utmost integrity! The NRL however there is big problems with co-operation and the NRL has finally done something after all this time - talk about shutting the gate after the horse bolted!
NRL seeks player co-operation with ASADA
By Steve Jancetic Monday, July 22, 2013 6:57:28 PM
The NRL will step in to ensure co-operation between players and ASADA investigators, with the league threatening sanctions for anyone not giving reasonable assistance when interviews resume next month.
A total of 30 players and support staff - which includes 10 Cronulla stars - were on Monday issued with directives by the NRL to schedule interviews with the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority, which is investigating the use of banned substances in the sport.
The players and officials have been given 48 hours to set up the interviews, which will begin on August 1.
But in a bid to avoid a repeat of the botched interview process which was called off in April when the first player questioned - Sharks back-rower Wade Graham - failed to co-operate, the NRL will send a representative to each interview.
Players could face sanctions under the league's anti-doping policy if they are found not to have provided reasonable assistance to investigators.
NRL club Cronulla are at the centre of the investigation with ten players facing sanctions as a result of the club's 2011 supplement program.
"The NRL will be in attendance at each interview to have greater visibility over the extent to which players cooperate and to ensure that the rights and obligations of all parties are respected," NRL chief operating officer Jim Doyle said in a statement.
"The rights of the players will be respected but at the same time we are sending a strong message about the need to co-operate with the investigation."
Players will still be able to decline answering any questions that may be self-incriminating.
The NRL said there was no time frame on when the interviews or investigation would be concluded.
Meanwhile the NRL says it has been assured of equal treatment from ASADA after a document emerged detailing a deal to "explore all avenues" to spare Essendon AFL players from suspensions over the systematic use of supplements last season.
News Ltd on Monday claimed that less than two weeks after the Australian Crime Commission released its report into drugs in sport and organised crime on February 7, the AFL and ASADA struck a deal to give Essendon players "an immediate level of comfort".
The document reportedly informs the players, some of whom are alleged to have had multiple injections of the peptide AOD-9604, about their chances of receiving a "complete elimination of sanction" pursuant to the "no fault" or "negligence" defences.
The NRL on Monday said it had received reassurances from both the government and ASADA that rugby league players would receive equal treatment as those from Essendon.
"From the highest levels, we have been assured continually that all parties will be treated equally throughout the process," an NRL spokesman told AAP.

Oho! The NRL got the message! NOW they're telling Cronulla to shape up after doing nothing! Cards on the table, Sharks, and you'll get the same treatment Essendon got. Fair's fair, right?

PSSST. You there, listen up. You know the AFL has cut a deal to get all its players off charges of drug use. Yep, dead-set. Essendon players won't face any charges over that peptide stuff.
ASADA is in it up to its neck too. The federal government is smack in the middle of it. Mate, just be told this is the biggest rort since cricket introduced the DRS. That AFL how-good-am-I-bloke, Andrew Demetriou, is the Gaiser Soso or how ever you spell it of the gang. Keyser Soze that's it. Watch him, Demetriou only limps when he wants. Mate, we're telling you he limped into the meeting that set up the deal. No limp when he walked out. Just saying.
It could bring down the government. The boatpeople won't decide this election. This is so big you can't call it a gate. It is more like a foyer or an entrance. Yeah, that's it, this is a vestibule. Demetribule.
We are telling you, they are all in it. The AFL, ASADA and Kate Lundy, the Sports Minister. Sorry, she's gone. She's now Minister for Assisting The Digital Economy. That's code, don't worry about that. Minister for Shutting The Vestibule more like it.
Don't worry, though, the NRL boffins are on to it. So are the NRL remora. They have got the document. Yep, the DOC-U-MENT. Not sure they have actually read it yet but the rort has been exposed. Some of the News Corp Australia papers published bits of the DOC-U-MENT.
How about this. These are some of the things agreed on in the DOC-U-MENT:
• Players will be given every chance to escape the mandatory two-year ban for illicit drug use.
• ASADA will explain to the players that these are exceptional circumstances and the defence of no fault or negligence may be available.
• It will be explained to the players that under a no fault or negligence defence a player can receive a complete elimination of sanction.
• Where a player does come forward and provides a sworn statement regarding his involvement or the involvement of any other person, ASADA and the AFL will fully explore all avenues in an attempt to provide a no-fault or negligence defence or substantial assistance.
• ASADA agrees that a significant contributing factor in the consideration of a no fault or negligence defence will be the extent to which players knew or suspected they had used prohibited substances at the instigation of sports science staff and took utmost caution in relation to the treatments they were receiving.
• Where ASADA forms the view that the defence of no fault or negligence is available in relation to a particular player, ASADA and the AFL agree that they will support the application of that defence to that player in proceedings before relevant sports tribunals.
In return for such consideration the AFL would ensure all players would co-operate with ASADA investigators. They would all be represented by AFL Player Association lawyers to facilitate what would be a protracted and difficult investigation.
Well, there it is. Demetribule. ASADA's obviously corrupt if, as some News reporters wailed last night, a deal had been cut even before the investigation started. Don't worry about the government. They agreed to it when the deal was puffed up at a bunga bunga party.
Just a warning. Don't fall for those AFL toadies who say the DOC-U-MENT only shows a framework for a very difficult and unique investigation. They will tell you it was a way forward for a complex inquiry. We'll do everything to help you, if you do everything to help us. That is, to attend interviews, tell the truth, protect no one. No guarantees about penalty, just that you will get every chance to explain what happened in 2012.
Come to think of it, this Demetribule might just be a beat-up by NRL sympathisers who have watched their own competition totally botch their chance to co-operate. The DOC-U-MENT guarantees nothing about sentences, penalties or secret deals. It is just a promise if you co-operate with authorities then the players will get every chance to state their case.
Reckon that is exactly what happened in the Lance Armstrong case. Give evidence freely and honestly and consideration will be given to your co-operation and penalty.
Hey, you better listen up again. On reflection this looks just a loud whinge from NRL sycophants covering up for their own bumbling sport. A bit of mud throwing. Call it just a jealous little Grubbygate.

How anyone could read the exerpts from Rebecca Wilson's leaked report and come to her same conclusions is beyond me. Patrick Smith had the right of it. The exerpts are there for all to see. Read them for yourself Dave.

Wow surely even RD doesnt believe his own dribble. One sport welcomed the investigation and it is almost finished. The other sport delayed and refused to cooperate. Which sport looks the worst because of it? There is only one answer.
