Not anymore. Now it's the sport Queenslanders want to belong to.
Participation in the state grew by 9 per cent between 2011 and 2012 and the AFL expects to have 155,000 participants in Queensland by the end of the year.

The only state with a higher participation rate is Victoria.
Of that 155,000, 93,000 students played the game [for six weeks or more], giving the game its highest school participation rate anywhere in the country.
More than 40,000 of the 135,000 female players nationwide are from Queensland, and 50 Queensland players are listed as AFL professionals.
Meanwhile in Burpengary, a $13 million AFL precinct is being built that, when finished, will have two fields, with room for one more, and could host pre-season games.
The Brisbane Lions are also considering basing their new training and administration centre in Nathan or Springwood.
AFL boss Andrew Demetriou said he was “really excited about what is happening in Queensland for our code”.
“By the end of the year, that [Queensland's] will be the second highest participation rate in Australia, higher than WA or South Australia,” he said.
“To see a facility like Burpengary is really pleasing.
“The Gold Coast Suns are on the up, and I think Brisbane have now shown the potential that they are a team on the rise.
"There is a lot to like about Queensland.”
However, it appears the code traditionally associated with the Sunshine State remains just ahead on the scoreboard.
Queensland Rugby League reported 170,027 active participants in 2012, including 60,099 men and 1752 women.
Just over 48,000 players were involved in regular school competitions, 26,356 participated in formal gala days and 35,477 played in the full five-week Back Yard League Program.
UPDATE: Football Federation Queensland have reported a total of 106,797 participants - 47,000 of those from school, 47,799 both boys and girls juniors and 3014 adult aged women.

Wow just wow

Still bugger all clubs in Victoria and if you wanted to play 1 you would have to search it out and 2. You'd have to be prepared to travel hours each week to play as one league covers Melbourne and geelong

"The AFL's bold move into the heart of Sydney may have started to pay dividends for the sport if Auskick participation rates are anything to go by."

to put it simply,
NO...
AFL club registration rates in western sydney is THE THING to go by...

registration figures are the the most accurate way in determining ACTUAL player participation numbers in sydney and western sydney, but strangely i find it considerably more difficult searching for these figures than i do with Auskick inflated 'participation' figures. Perhaps the AFL have not realised this and thats why the media (like with this article) mistakeinly use participation figures so much. I think somebody needs to inform the AFL... gee wont the AFL bosses faces be red  when they realise the AFL have been publishing 'participation' figures and not actual figures here in sydney for many years :^o

The one aspect people contiually overlook is that of school competition.
If you check out club sites you will notice some new clubs but mainly new teams.
With the obvious difficulty in creating new clubs mainly due to the lack of grounds
the rapid acceptance of school competition has facilitated the playing of Aussie Rules.
In most staets now schools competitions have become the elite
riding high over the traditional community competitions.
Nice try Cos.

"surge" is abit of an overstatement.

I agree with you that the emergence of school competitions is a positive for AFL, i have not seen it personally in my area (which is auburn/parramatta region) but if school competitions have increased in other areas that is good news for AFL.

I do however disagree with you on lack of grounds. the are many cricket/oval grounds throughout sydney and western sydney that could be played by AFL. It is more the lack of people wanting to play AFL than a lack of grounds. I do admit it is very hard to establish a new club and perhaps afew years of quality school AFL competitions may increase the need to more clubs to form.

The biggest problem that the surge in Auskick numbers is the lack of affiliation to clubs as I see it. In Melb East Subs the Auskick clubs are separate but still affiliated with the local club - in the EFL there are 4 divisions of clubs with junior clubs attached and whilst numbers fluctuate there is always 4 divisions of juniors in each age group (8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17). That's what AFL really needs to establish which is firm links to local clubs - grounds will always be difficult because there is so much competition for grounds in Sydney e.g. RL, RU, Soccer and AF - in Melb East Sub's there is one RU club at box hill, one junior RL club in Bayswater a large number of soccer grounds and something like 40 senior clubs. And much more juniors. There isn't the competition from two other codes.

The total juniors playing AF in ALL of sydney was 7694 as the article below States.
So that's about double the amount playing RL in Western Australia, but let's not forget Sydney's population is double western Australia's too. So really Sydney's AF figures and WA's are compareable

Rot. There are no junior leagues in WA judging by the absence of evidence that proves that they exist.
