A FRESH gaffe by the new NRL chief executive David Smith in a speech in which he got Ben Barba's name wrong last night dampened the power of his words about hope and confidence in the sport. In November, when he was introduced at a media conference as the new chief executive, Smith could not name Cameron Smith as the Australian captain or identify any players pictured in an Indigenous All Stars moment which included Johnathan Thurston and Sam Thaiday. Then last night he confused 'Ben' with 'Benji'.
