There nothing wrong with the term particiaption if the criteria are stated.
The problem arises with confusion of the terms which mean different things to different people.
There are Auskick clinics, Auskick games and Auskick programs.
What is called Auskick in Victoria is known as "modified rules" in other states.
Then there is "open" or "premiership" football and then senior football.

That would be just as misleading in places where club structures are almost impossible to build from scratch (Sydney) and the mantle of organised competition is taken up by schools.

But if the participation figures were clearly itemised then we could glean a lot more.
A percentage of players attending Auskick clinics could be expected to attend an Auskick Program.
A percentage of players attending Auskick programs could be expected to attend junior competitions.
A percentage of players attending junior competitions could be expected to attend teenage competitions.
A percentage of players attending teenage competitions could be expected to attend senior competitions.
A percentage of players at each level could be expected to show an interest elite competitions by attending games or watching TV.
