Exactly

A perfect example is the Australian open men's final.

Pre 2004 it was scheduled on Sunday afternoon. During this time it never made the top 20 list of most watched shows for the year.

In 2005 it was changed to Sunday evening prime time and was the number 1 rated show for the year. Hewitt played of course which helped.
2006 it was number 4
2007 it was number 3
2008 it was number 4
Etc etc

So prime time makes a massive difference to ratings. If the AFL GF was shown in prime time it would be the number one rating show by a mile every single year.

Yep.

Are you suggesting the AFL hasn't sold out Etihad before?

Are you insinuating RL is more popular than AFL in Melbourne?

You do realize the AFL have had 9 games with larger crowds already this season?

This is the point, Cooee. The game wasn't played at the largest capacity venue. Think about that one before crowing about the crowd. Yeah it beat the top AFL crowd in history, but it DIDN'T beat the venue sporting record! (Wallabies v Lions in 2001 pulled 584 more)

*It didn't even beat WWE Global Warning in 2002!! :p

I thought this particular argument was all about Aussie Rules crowds V Rugby League crowds. Fact is the Rugby Leage has drawn a bigger crowd at Etihad than any Aussie Rules crowd.

I guess using your stats that would make the Aussie Rules the THIRD most attended football code at this MELBOURNE venue.

Nuff Said

Are you seriously trying to suggest RL is more popular in Melbourne than the AFL based on one crowd at the smaller stadium in Melbourne (hint you lot play at Etihad becuase the MCG was a disaster crowds wise for RL) ?

Oh dear... #-o

Please explain why Victorians do not support the Melbourne Storm? 12k average crowds. OMG... shame job

Because the fact is that the nRL hasn't expanded beyond 2 states which is its weakness.Yet the fact soo involves only 2 states is the very reason SOO works. Having two rival teams is an ideal arrangment. As the saying goes "Twos company, threes a crowd". If there was a third strong state the rivalry wouldn't work near as well. If the third state was week they would either have to be excluded or the result would be some very uninteresting matches, devaluing the product.

So SOO is strong primarily because the nRL is weak
But RL has expanded better than your mob haven't they? :D

Yeah, Australia has had around 110,000 while England has a game between 102,000 and 140,0000 :)

(Gates were smashed down hours before 102,0000 crammed in)
