The AFL has many more than that because we had the foresight to spend, something that Dave Doofus scoffs at. It's spending on venues like Etihad, Patersons, AAMI Stadium and Metricon that gets us the crowds that NRL clubs in Sydney can only dream of.

in the last 20 yrs the total home and away season crowds have increased by 940k

in the last 10 yrs the total home and away season crowds have increased by 712k

in the last 5 years the total home and away season crowds have increased by 316k


AFL

in the last 20 yrs the total home and away season crowds have increased by 2,728k

in the last 10 yrs the total home and away season crowds have increased by 604k

in the last 5 years the total home and away season crowds have increased by 321k

Hmmm, seems like the NRL are not closing the gap at all. On last figures it's still growing! At this rate the NRL will catch up in infinity years!

Lets talk about memberships:

NRL

this year they are crowing about a 10% across the board increase to bring their tally to over 200k. Yet 10% of 200k is only 20k, a modest increase really.

this year the AFL have seen an increase of 8% despite every game now being televise live. 8% is less than 10%? Yes. But 8% of 650k is 52K! More than double the NRL's increase! The previous year also saw a rise of over 40K.

Well lets look at which codes are successfully taking their game to non-heartland Australian markets:

NRL

11 years ago the NRL had a total audience of 156k in non heartland Australian states and territories. Last year they had an audience of 196.2k. Thats an increase of 40k over 10yrs.


AFL

11 years ago the AFL had a total audience of 732k in non heartland Australian states (including TAS who don't have an AFL team). Last year they had an audience of 832k. An increase of 100k or 2.5 times the NRL!

The NRL expansion will catch AFL in................infinity!

AFL teams only have 11 home games. The storm have 12. There were 35 home and away AFL games in QLD/NSW/ACT. There were 14 NRL games in Vic/SA/WA. Dividing by 3 doesn't quite cut it then does it (3x14=42)? The storm were near top. Two of the AFL sides on the bottom. Hmmmm, NRL expansion....
