Carlton, one of the richest clubs owes 10m because of recent stadium building works. Their memberships (up 20%) and revenue (up5m on last year) are growing massively and they plan eliminate the debt in as few as 5 years.

Other clubs that owe a fair proportion of that 40m a collingwood, hawthorn and Geelong. As if they will ever have problems paying debt with such massive membership and revenue umbers.

Debt is only bad if you can't service it. Meanwhile some NRL clubs..........
but but but
Where is the "but" idiot? The vast majority of debt in the AFL is attributed the the richest teams who are more than capable of covering it, and are growing significantly. These clubs have the ability to borrow money to improve their facilities and pay it back without issue. Even poorer clubs like Melbourne have erased their debt easily.

All this is because the AFL clubs have revenue streams that are near double the NRL clubs. All this is provided by their excellent membership figures, gate takings and subsequent sponsorship deals because of their popularity.

Need I remind you that only about half the AFL clubs do that, yet almost every NRL club does it. And the NRL clubs earn bugger all revenue too! #-o

Grants to the clubs only cover a proportion of their revenue. The NRLs revenue will not double because they do not rely entirely on the thir TV rights! They have other revenue streams. Therefore the majority of the extra revenue the clubs get may have to go directly to the increase salary cap, leaving clubs still in financial difficulty.
