The grass roots comps are growing. Participation numbers are growing. FTA and payTV coverage is increasing tremendously.
WHAT ?

the Swans have been on in prime time in Sydney for 30 years ...
what drugs are you on today ?

What? Even if the swans get the odd prime time game, which they don't often because most of their games are Sunday afternoon during a low rating period, AFL has not been consistently shown during prime time in Sydney for 30yrs!
It hasnt even been for Melbourne!

I'd be interested to see the rate at which they are growing...could it just be at the same rate as population growth?
they'll trott out the ausfudge figures again E
of course we know they aren't players ... just kids who took part in a clinic at school pretty much never to be seen again
participation numbers are pretty modest for AFL in Sydney .. the Central Coast ... Newcastle & the Illawarra
a report in 2009 had the total registered player numbers for these areas encompassing 5.5 Million people .... at less then 9500
& only 1900 in Western Sydney
oh dear

Auskick is a game of AFL, Dave. Don't slander it like that again.
9500 is a good number, considering that RL has a lot less than that playing around Melbourne!

RL in Melbourne is very very uncommon. You only need to look at the number of NRL players from VIC SA WA TAS to realize what a minor sport it is. Compare these figures to the many current AFL listed players from QLD and NSW. :D

it isn't
& 9500 is appalling ...
AR has been played in Sydney for ova 100 years ... & it has had an AFL team , so a profile for 30 of those years
RL has only been played in Melbourne for really only 30 years .... with a top line side for 13 years
& RL hasn't spent 250 million dollars trying to convert people ova the last 30 years either
like the AFL has
9500 is a woeful result considering.

No it's not. In RL heartland it's a good result. I would only call it bad if it was AFL heartland.

Answer this point Dave. It shows the real relevance of each code in all states.

66 current AFL players are from NSW/ACT/QLD

ah.... its deceiving
AR has been played in the Sthn part of NSW .. the Riverina .. for well ova 100 years
& this is where almost all of NSW's AFL players have come from
& despite a truckload of money spent on trying to convert the said 5.5 Million people in NSW in Sydney & near by it ova the last 30 years
almost NO AFL players hail from these parts .. to say a lot of AFL players hail from NSW is a technicality
your code has failed badly in most of the state
this is a fact.

after just 13 years of a side in Melb ?
as many as Sydney had after the same amount of time the Swans were in Sydney
none....
but the Storms SG ball side is very strong .. & nearly all born n raised Victorains
as is their Toyota Cup side ... a very strong outfit ... & half of them are Victorians
they'll be Victorians in the NRL before too long
Perths SG ball side is a handy unit
when the Reds return there ... watch our code take off in the west

obviously have some ex **** in their origins
theres a lot of these ex Sthn halfwits in Qld.........
the same as Sydneysiders ... no self respecting Qlder born n raised in the Maroon state ... has anything to do with fumbleball ..

Interestingly my brother is a PE teacher and one of his students is on the storms list. He's a Maori but apparently he's huge and can run sub 12sec for the 100m. I'd be interested to see if any of the Victorian RL representatives are Caucasian though.

What these figures show is that there are enough people playing in grass roots comps in NSW and Qld which are strong enough to produce a significant proportion of AFL quality players. Obviously as people play the game they become interested and watch it too. Hence the AFL has a far greater chance of surviving in NSW and QLD compared to RL in AFL states.

Wrong.
