And yet despite the financial pressures many Australians are feeling at home in tough economic times, members of these clubs have responded in an overwhelmingly positive fashion.
Melbourne has eliminated its $4 million debt, Richmond has wiped half of its $6 million deficit, and the Bulldogs nearly a quarter of theirs ($5m).
Essendon and North Melbourne have also raised significant funds - $500,000 and $400,000 respectively - in a short period.
But Kangaroos chief executive Eugene Arocca is not surprised.
"One thing that I've become aware of in relation to football is that it seems to be bulletproof to economic circumstances," Arocca said.
"In fact football itself, AFL/VFL, seems to thrive at times when there was adversity or when the economic conditions weren't ideal.

Re: Solution to NRL's current crisis
Whilst I started this thread as a bit of fun, in fact there is a serious suggestion there.
With that article showing 14 nrl clubs are constantly in debt and only one nrl club is in the black then obviously the nrl has to do something. At the moment it is clear gallop has clinging to the TV deal as the only lifeline.
Not only is it absolute bs to be talking about expansion the whole house of cards could collapse if he cannot bridge the gap.
It's a catch 22 position.
The nrl isn't going to get the money unless it can guarentee clubs and the clubs aren't going to exist without the money from a new deal.
The situation is so critical that there has been mention of a one year deal.
Obviously the media has the upper hand. They know the nrl cannot afford a protracted negotiation period.
Is Gallop going to resign when $1billion doesn't come through ?
Is Gallop going to resign when expansion is culled ?

Why do you keep bringing up basketball?
The AFL don't need to pay anything back. If they do there won't be any internet or mobile access, at all.

Re: Solution to NRL's current crisis
At least NRL clubs haven't resorted to begging for money from supporters to eliminate debt like AFL clubs.
Re: Solution to NRL's current crisis
Maybe it's about time they did, because their turnover is terrible compared to the AFL clubs!
