Another week, another smashing tv ratings victory for the AFL over the NRL.

0 viewers for an NRL semi final decided by one point in Adelaide, 6,000 and 9,000 in Perth and 18,000 and 11,000 in Melbourne. Why does Channel 9 bother with NRL outside of Sydney and Brisbane.

You have to admire the AFL crew who continue to only want to "count" the people who "support" their view of the world and still cannot reach the right conclusions.

You see even if you accept the 5 city only metro ratings you get the NRL at 80% of the AFL number. Now 80% of the AFL TV deal would be a a billion dollars plus. However, the AFL crew who measure everything from their perspective cannot get their own calculation right.

Of course it is all a nonsense as you have to count all Australians to determine both popularity and the value of TV deals.

The idea that businesses collate and report regional ratings and then no one uses them is also a nonsense.

The regional TV stations have to know what works and what doesnt work and thus the value of their advertising space. Which leads them to determine how much they will pay the lead TV stations for the content. The lead commercial stations use them to negotiate with the regional stations in exactly the same way as they determine value with the marketing companies who buy advertising space for the major companies who advertise on TV.

A game that only rates in some parts of two states of Australia will never match the national appeal to advertisers that the AFL can provide. That's just simple reality. I do wish you throwball fans would learn to deal with that and know your place in the Australian sporting landscape.

As the football code with the highest aggregate Tv ratings for the last 3 years that dominates the sports coverage for the majority of Australians I reckon the code knows exactly where it is at.

The advertisers will love the fact that NRL dominates the markets where the majority of advertising dollars are spent. They will love that its ratings are growing significantly year on year. They will love the fact that NRL is dominant on both FTA and PAY TV.

Bring on the money Let the facts not the hyperbole talk for themselves.

If the NRL can come from behind the AFL post Super League with considerably less dollars from TV and then pass it then imagine what they can do with an extra $100m a year! A couple of extra teams that will generate true national coverage.

The times they are changing.

Blah, blah, blah. Every tv deal you lot sprout the same rubbish about the times are changing and the AFL is overpriced and everything will be rosy for the NRL. Broadcasters just ain't interested in a product that only rates in some parts of NSW and QLD. Broadcasters and advertisers alike want national appeal that only the AFL can deliver.

Well that would be the AFL with a national footprint and as proven by the record tv ratings/rights deals negotiated every 5 years.

In what country does the AFL have proven national results? Surely not this one unless the definition of "national" is someone watched in the different states.

It cannot mean that one won/dominated their time slot or even got a large audience because the AFL does not achieve that in some places eg Sydney - I think this is regarded as a significant market.

The Swans after 30 years in Sydney,having all their games shown live for several years, got 121k to watch their semifinal in Sydney. That would be about 20% of the audience that would watch a normal Friday night NRL game.

Yes you could say that being a big winner with the advertisers.

Just how many myths are there in the AFL kit bag?

Australia of course where the AFL is the undisputed indigenous national sport with support in each and every state/territory of this great land.

Australian Football rates much better than Rugby League outside of it's heartlands.

136k actually and up against a prime time NRL final but never let facts get in the way eh?

Meanwhile and NRL final in Melbourne in similar circumstances up against an AFL final only rated 86k in Melbourne.

Advertisers love the AFL. Think about all the official products of the AFL advertised on TV.

Toyota = Official Car of the AFL
NAB = Official Bank of the AFL
Virgin Australia = Official Airline of the AFL
Holilday Inn = Official Hotel of the AFL
Hungry Jacks = Official Burger of the AFL
Powerade = Official Sports Drink of the AFL
Swisse = Official Vitiams of the AFL
Coca Cola = Official Soft Drink of the AFL
Carlton = Official Beer of the AFL

There are many, many more national/international companies too.

It does'nt match it... it outrates it. But then ...reality never was your strong point

There are over 5m people you dont like to count because it embarrases the hell out of the AFL that there number 2 ! Stop kidding yourself its about geographics - dots on a map - it's not. The majority of Australians live in either NSW or Qld.............That means rugby league goes to a larger(national) audience and were only talking about Australia here (god help the AFL if we start talking international).
