That'd be because you're in victoria, of course people there wouldn't know what team is what. I have no clue about any AFL team except the swans. oh and collingwood is black and white just like the Western Suburb Magpies were. There's also a black and gold team in AFL but dunno who that is...

NRL is definitely stronger in victoria than AFL is in sydney, no one could give two flying fucks about the GF.

I'm always surprised how much you AFL fans know about NRL, the CEO is dave smith, lots of clubs and players. I don't know anyone who doesn't follow AFL that could name the same amount of people and teams in aussie rules including myself.
no i have lived in Brisbane for the last 3 years & in qld for the last 11, ive lived, Cairns, Sunshine Coast, Mount isa, Emerald, Mackay, Toowoomba, working in the mining industry as a HD Fitter & i can tell you one thing little people give a shit about League, when state of origin is on, there are many parties you can attend just for an excuse for a bbq & a piss up, they have less interest & knowledge of the NRL than me.
every pub you walk in to has league playing on tv through foxtel, its because News ltd, until lately where part owners of the NRL. so why wouldnt they play & promote their own producd.

buy you stating that NRL is bigger in Melbourne than AFL in sydney, clearly shows you have limittd knowledge, of anything happening out side of NSW. just because something is big in your own state, doesn't mean the rest of Australia could care about it.

So then how come more people watched the NRL GF in melbourne than watched the AFL GF in sydney? And obviously sydney has an extra 600,000 people and neither team had a team in the other GF.

400k for melbourne watching NRL and 340k watching AFL in sydney if you were wondering

You're just wrong phy3 re nrl being popular in Vic more so than AFL in Sydney. One league for all if Victoria for rl ... 1 .

AFL 5 leagues in Sydney alone.

You can spin it anyway you want but AFL beat the nrl all round this year . The one thing rl does well is soo... No doubt . But the paradox is that this is also the one thing damaging the nrl season proper. Although easily fixed by playing it out of season.

Also, nrl grand final on in prime time Sunday night ... Accounting for 15 to 20 percent rise in the casual viewer... And still loses.
Victorians, and Australians will watch marquee events ... Especially sports mad Victorians ... I was surprised it was so low.

So ratings ... Win fur AFL over nrl

Crowds ... Win AFL

Membership .. Win AFL

You think prime time might have something to do with it? Plus Melbourne is full of genuine sports fans who will watch just about any major sporting event like a GF. But the ratings for home and away NRL show the real interest and plummet to less than 30 thousand during the year. Melbourne also has a sizable kiwi population who obviously like a form of rugby.

Don't kid yourself. I'd be lucky to name half a dozen NRL players, and that's only because I talk to NRL fans regularly on forums. We all know the shortcomings of the NRL. Theyre as plain as the pimply nose on your face.

Prime time Sunday night. Marquee event .. You're going to watch it if your home ... Victorians love sport.

So, as the title if this thread alludes to a debate as to which is the number 1 code of football in Australia it would appear clear that out of the winter codes that AFL, for 2013, has won in almost every category over nrl. The only area that nrl had a decisive victory was in representative football with their state of origin. Indeed this very concept continues to rate well, more so than any of either AFL or nrl marquee events, namely the grand finals of each code. On all other measures AFL continues to dominant, with superior tv ratings across the home and away season and superior ratings across the finals. In fact, the AFL grand final out rated the nrl grand final despite the later being on prime time Sunday night.

AFL crowds also dwarfed that of nrl crowds, both in aggregate and averages. Most notably, AFL drew higher average crowds in Sydney then the nrl.

Membership also saw AFL dwarf that of the nrl however it should be noted that the AFL have a strong culture of membership. On saying this, the two expansion clubs continue to have membership levels that some nrl in Sydney would die for.

So for all but 1 measure, representative games (of which the AFL did away with some years ago), the AFL gave the nrl a pantsing.

it must hurt so much interest interest in origin & none in the proper NRL comp
as i keep saying , people only pay interest in origin because of the State vs state factor, most people couldn't give a shit about League,
the amount of origon parties ive been to, where the only thing people know about league are what colour shirt the Marons where & what colour NSW wear,
every pub in NSW & QLD show the origin hence the good tv ratings, but the only thing watching them are poker machines,

all origin games can rate over 5 million as far as reality is, still no one will care about league, its because its the state of NSW vs QLD :)))

they watch origin because they couldn't give a shit about league ? :-k
