AFL is the dominant sport in WA ... all of it.

AFL is the dominant sport in the NT ... whether it is a state or not is irrelevant .... it’s still the dominant sport in that northern part of the country .

Aussie Rules has clubs and teams right across the country ... as shown by the clubs listed. It is played in significant numbers in qld and nsw.

NSW is not completely rl. Australian Rules is the dominant sport in many parts, and on equal footing in others.

It may serve the insecurities of some nrl zealots to define AFL as only being a Southern sport as an attempt to minimise the position Australian Rules have in this country but the reality is it is played all over the country and is Australia’s biggest sporting organisation for a reason. Rugby League basically sold out Perth with state of Origin. A place where our sport doesn't even have a team so we know the potential there. A bigger crowd in Perth than EVERY SINGLE AFL game in NSW or Queensland this year.
Australia and New Zealand test matches sold out in Perth too. AFL is even talking about Origin now after seeing it's success in Perth.

The reality is AFL can only survive in Australia.
New Zealand exhibition AFL matches were cancelled due to such poor interest.
While exhibition matches in China are just a total embarrassment and nightmare for AFL.

Then you look at AFL in NSW and Qld. Is the sport really that strong when 95% of matches are shown on 7mate?
7mate a tv station which has an average audience of about 3.5%.

Wouldn't they alway show AFL on the main Ch7 like the NRL does on Ch9 if AFL was so popular in these states??

Rugby League seems to be doing alot better in Canada than AFL in China too lol..

You are definetely right re: AFL just being a major sport in one country. I have no problem with that at all. It simply doesn’t matter to me or many others I think.

I think AFL as the competition has a long way to go in nsw and to a lesser extent qld. You are correct, if it were that popular it would be mainly on the main chsnnel. It is not. Australian Rules however is played in significant numbers across both states in both weekend comps and throughout schools and is growing in significant numbers . Both a junior and senior levels. The amount of players at the elite level is one measure of this. As too the amount of clubs and leagues. As you rightly pointed out in another thread, growth of wa rl participants up 16 percent... a great result and that is where you grow the game. Australian rules football is played at grassroots right across the country in significant numbers... and this is something the rl folk need to work on if they hoped to be a national sport I feel.

You certain Anglofl is growing outside the south? A decade on expansion clubs are without fanbases. Senile swans crowds down & still no TV audience after 38 years. Anglokick is nice but school kids also forced to play French cricket & that goes nowhere. SMH journo tasked with covering the game confirms any growth is a myth.
