Their average crowd this year - where an entire members' stand was unavailable - was the lowest it's been since 1996, and it was STILL higher than every single sydney based NSWRL team.

& those sydney based NRL clubs ... are closer then ever ... just 1000 behind in 2012
where as in 2007 ... they were 16,000 behind

if they weren't a top 4 side all year this year ... they would have fallen behind by 4000 behind the bulldogs

The year preceeding 2007 was a GF appearance for the Swans. I'll be interested to see what effect this latest premiership has on 2013 crowds, even with a missing members' stand.

Swans were only ahead by 1,000 in 1995. Then they played in a GF and broke away. Did it again during the 2005-2007 period. Wonder what'll happen in 2013?

The NRLs crowds havent dropped because they havent expanded, changed their telecasting or upgraded any stadiums. If theyd dropped while keeping the status quo youd be completely stuffed.

I didn't start at zero. 2007 was an increase on 2006 for the Swans, and 2005 was an increase on 2004 for the NSWRL. I will not resort to name calling with you Dave, as you almost certainly have cognative disabilities and that would be wrong.

The drop from the Swans' peak of 35k in 2007, is more significant than the drop in the NSWRL since 2005's mighty average of 16k. In much the same way as a fall from Everest is worse than a fall from an anthill. I'd still preferred to have climed Everest in the first place though .

Regardless of the percentages, the fact remains, that using your maths logic, if the Swans crowds have dropped for 7 years in a row, so have the NSWRL's.

I must admit I am still trying to get my head around the statement about fewer attending due to expansion. (You would hope that expanding the number of teams therefore the number of games would result in the expansion of the numbers there to watch the game live Expansion = get bigger and get bigger crowds.

So the story goes, they get more teams and build bigger stadiums, show all games on TV so they can reduce the attendances. I wonder why the NRL didn't do the same. There not dopey idiots that's why.

Maybe the AFL should not have shown all the games live and may have built up a following of live attendance by NOT showing all the games live. Being hungry for the TV bucks has meant fewer attending games (i would assume loss of revenue) loss of sale of club merchandise, jumpers etc at the game (I would assume loss of revenue) I wonder if the membership has/will drop. There are benefits of being a member when you go to a game, isn't there? What if you don't go, do you still bother paying membership fees? When membership goes down wouldn't that mean that revenue goes down also?

They already had one of the highest attendance averages for any domestic league in the world. The AFL wouldnt be worried nor are the fans. Of course they were going to drop from that very high average attendance.

They averaged over 36k per game yet introduced two brand new teams into markets where 10-20k attendance was the norm.

They gave them stadiums with 25k max capacity.

They increased the number of games played in Tasmania which had they been played in Melbourne would have got double the attendance.

They doubled the number of expansion teams which of course draw lower crowds than homeland teams.

They introduced two brand new teams that will take a few years to become competitive, resulting in many one-sided games.

This just happened to coincide with two stadiums undergoing renovations causing capacity reductions, and many sold out games.

They also introduced live TV for every game resulting in record ratings and exposure.

Seriously, what moron thinks that all those important changes werent worth a small dip in crowd averages? What would be worrying is if the crowds dipped like that with no change.

thanks for that Dave! Sydneys crowds were well down because of stadium capacity issues. So thats a clear sign they would have had a healthy rise otherwise.
